AS I SEE IT!

W ell, another m onth has gone by, rather quickly I m ight add. W e have been busy
around the S t. G eorge household getting back into the school routine. G etting up early,
hom ew ork, etc. I am sure there are m any other hom es that are having the sam e issues.
This m onth I w ant to discuss the H eart of a volunteer and how im portant they are to
our com m unity. W hat is a volunteer? A ccording to A uthor, philosopher, and hum anitarian
Jean Vanier a volunteer is a person "w ho does a lot but doesn't talk about it"
V olunteers are the m ost im portant resource com m unity organizations have. The abil
ity of people to w ork together fo r the betterm ent of their com m unity and them selves is a
valuable resource.
The im age of a volunteer has changed over tim e. G one is the stereotype of the house
w ife w ith tim e on her hands. N ow they com e from all w alks of life: they m ay be a teenager
learning responsibility, an executive sharing m anagem ent skills w ith a com m unity group or a
retiree enjoying new friendships as a reader at a local library.
Ideally, volunteers find the donation of their tim e and energy a m eaningful experi
ence fo r them selves as w ell as the organization. A true "w in/w in" situation.
So, if you have som e tim e or a skill that can help out your com m unity, go fo r it. B utte
Falls has m any com m unity groups that depend on volunteers and they can alw ays use your
help.
