L ast m onth I talked about volunteering in your com m unity, this m onth I w ould
like to talk about another form . This is a job that is one of the m ost challenging
and hardest things you have ever done but it is also one of the m ost rew arding.
I am talking about being a Foster Parent.
C hildren often com e into foster care w ith nothing but the clothes on their
backs. They m ay be rem oved from their hom es in the m iddle of extrem ely trau
m atic circum stances, leaving them no tim e to prepare or grab anything that
brings com fort or m akes them feel norm al. They som etim es w ait hours in state
foster care offices w hile casew orkers search for available foster hom es and at
tim es the casew orker will stay w ith them in m otel room s because of a lack of
foster hom es.
W hen a fam ily takes in a foster child they experience the joy of w atching
that child grow in m any w ays. From the physical skills learned by an infant to
the em otional m aturity gained by a teen, foster fam ilies can help children grow
strong and healthy. This can last a lifetim e and beyond, changing life not only
for the child in their care but also for future generations.
