As an old man walked down the beach, a child ahead of him was picking up starfish
and flinging them into the sea. Finally catching up with the child, he asked, “Why are you do
ing this?" The answer was that the starfish would die if left in the sun. “But the beach goes
on for miles and there are millions of starfish," said the old man. “How can your efforts make
a difference?" As the child looked at the starfish in his hand and threw it safely into the
waves, the child smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!"
We all have the opportunity and ability to help create a positive change. A simple act
of kindness towards your neighbor, is a great way to start. You may not solve major social
issues like world hunger or a cure for cancer but you can change a small part of it, for some
