    GRANT FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR HOME
PROTECTION
Central Point, OR: The Oregon Department of
Forestry has received National Fire Plan grant
funding from the Bureau of Land Management for
the protection of homes in the wildfire areas of
Jackson and Josephine Counties.
The program is designed to provide safety zones
around existing homes and along driveways that
will provide:
*
Safe evacuation or escape routes for
residents
* mlkjihgfedcbaZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA
Access for firefighters and fire-fighting
equipment
*
Areas where firefighters will have a better
chance of safely and effectively protecting homes
from approaching wildfires.
Big Bimtte Historical
By removing or reducing flammable vegetation,
residents can affect the way an approaching
wildfire would behave. If done properly, the
project would dramatically lower the intensity of a
wildfire, while maintaining a desirable, natural
looking, and healthy forest setting.

Residents can apply for cost-share incentives up
to $330.00 to modify an acre of vegetation around
their homes. They can complete the work them
selves or hire it out. In some instances, up to 4
additional acres around a home and driveway may
be approved. Modifications include removing
dead vegetation, thinning-out flammable brush
and small trees, and creating vertical spaces
between flammable brush and the lower limbs of
larger trees.
To request this service, residents can call the
Oregon Department of Forestry at 474-3152 in
Grants Pass, or 664-3328 in Central Point. Forest
Officers are available to meet with residents to
design hazard reduction plans. Once the work has
been completed, they will return to verify the
completed work and process paperwork for a
costshare reimbursement.
