STOP, DROP, COVER & ROLL...

Butte Falls Elementary First through Fourth
Graders had the opportunity to visit the Butte \\
Falls Volunteer Fire Department and leam about
fire safety during National Fire Safety Month.
Teachers and students enjoyed a short walk to the
fire station on October 10 to meet with Fire Chief
Rick Martin, Assistant Chief Jeff Gorman, and
Firefighters Shelly Conopa, Steve Harvey, and
Junior Firefighter, Mike Hansen. The kids
participated in a fire safety question and answer
session with Chief Martin. The critical key point a
child needs to leam about a house fire is what to
listen and look for if they smell smoke. Dressed in
full firefighting clothes and equipment, Firefighter
Conopa, demonstrated what a child would see and
hear during a fire rescue by talking through a
breathing apparatus while crawling on the floor
toward the children, in a rescue situation,
particularly in dense smoke, an approaching
firefighter can appear frightening and intimidating
to youngsters. The children were encouraged to
touch the firefighter and look at the different
equipment she was wearing as a way to assure
them there is nothing to fear. Also, Firefigher
Hansen demonstrated wildland fire clothes and
gear while Assistant Chief Gorman explained the
difference. Afterwards the children were taught to
"stop, drop, cover & roll", the other key point to
leam for fire rescue. All graduated the class with
honors and were presented with stickers and a
firefighting bag of goodies. The main highlight of
the day, however, was the presentation of new
bicycle helmets by the Fire Department to the
elementary students. Nancy Thompson helped
with the coordination of helmets. These helmets,
to be distributed by elementary teachers, were a
gift obtained through a partnership grant thanks
to Firefighter Robert Walters, Fire District 3.
