Sarah Matthews interviews two of our Foreign Exchange Students
Lou H oyer is a foreign ex
change student visiting B utte
Falls from Berlin, the capital
city of G erm any. She cam e to
A m erica to see w hat the big
difference was between the
tw o countries and to learn m ore
about the U SA and the A m eri
can people. B efore she cam e
here Lou attended a tw o-w eek
preparation cam p in Boston, M assachusetts
w hich is provided by the EF foundation for ex
change students. R efina Azw an, another fo r
eign exchange student from the sam e program ,
attended a sim ilar cam p in S eattle, W ashington.
Lou believes that Am erica, as w ell as B utte
Falls, is a lot stricter. "C urfew is stricter here
in B utte Falls and so is being late for school.
Back at hom e I was alw ays late for school." She
also stated that "B utte Falls is a lot sm aller then
Berlin, but everything in Am erica is sm aller then
back hom e, even the houses are sm aller." Lou
also com m ented that her school "is a lot bigger
and we can't choose all of our classes like you do
in the U nited S tates."
The thing that Lou says she m isses the m ost
from G erm any is her friends and fam ily because
they are the m ost im portant thing in the w orld
to her, even though her new friends in B utte
Falls are really, really nice. H er hobbies are hang
ing out w ith her friends and playing sports
W hile attending B utte Falls H igh Scnool, Lou has
becom e an active m em ber of our school's N FL
club, winning m any trophies for her dram atic
interpretation from Sophie's Choice, and a valu
able m em ber of our Basketball and Volleyball
team s. She also participated in the BFHS play
Les Miserablesin M ay, in the acting and m usical
role of Fantine. In the m eantim e, she is enjoy
ing her tim e w ith her host fam ily, Ken and M el
issa O wens and their ram bunctious children.
