These student’s that you are about to read
about deserve a “Night’s Repose” after
working on their projects to possibly eam a
college tuition grant from the Jim Matthews
Memorial Scholarship. For the last three years
graduating high school seniors have had the
opportunity to earn from five hundred to three
thousand dollars to go towards their college
tuition for the coming year at a college of their
choice.
In 1S98, Danny Krenwinkel received Three
thousand dollars for the renovation of Mac
Field. He displayed true leadership skills by
involving so many youths in this project.
Lilian Lawrence received a scholarship for the
renovation of the Butte Falls Cemetery
including a new fence, sign and general
clean-up. Amber Hersom started a youth
center that lasted three years. It provided a
safe place for the towns kids to go on their
free time.

In 1939, Charlie McLauchlan built a 0.6 mile
road to the falls and received a three
thousand dollar scholarship. He got special
permission from Superior Lumber to do the
work which included grading and graveling
the road and burning 34 brush piles in the
area. Jeremy McKibbin worked on the parking
lot trail to the falls and improved the picnic
area, which was a huge improvement for the
community. Maggie Harrington helped with
the construction of a new bridge for the Fairy
Glenn Park.
In 2000, Brian Hanson built a one mile hiking
trail and picnic area along the creek by;the '*•
falls. Travis Smelts greatly improved Mac - ■
Field including a water fountain, new
bleachers and score- board. Heidi
McLauchlan built a playground at the Fairy
Glen Park. It is a safe* colorful and fun area

Sara Lawrence received a three thousand
dollar scholarship for the refurbishing of the
tennis court in the Butte Falls Park. She
received a total of twelve thousand dollars in
grant money to complete her dream of a new
tennis court. Sara said she learned some new
bookkeeping skills with the money she
received for the project. She installed a new
retaining wall and wind screens, r e s u r f a c e d
the court, had the lights r e p a i r e d a n d a d d e d a
- ^memorial rock that is d e d i c a t e d t o J i m
Matthews. Sara alone worked 1 5 2 h o u r s a n d
~
h0r ma°y volunteers worked 2 2 8 h o u r s t o
help complete the p r o j e c t . S h e a l s o u s e d h e r
talent in video and created a video of h e r
project from beginning to c o m p l e t i o n . T h e
newtennis court is being enjoyed by the
community. This past summer tennis lessons
were given to children and adults from our
community.

The word T BA
e n a c i o u s means ; cohesive, tough,
holding fast, not easily pulled apart, retentive.
It seems this word describes these students.
They got going on these projects and they
were not going to give up until they were
done. Although, at times it would have been
the easiest thing to do. Some of them were
putting the finishing touches on their
undertaking right up until time for the judging
committee to come around. And, wfe do want
to remember the many extra volunteers that
helped them out. I think you know who you
are. That is what makes this town so great....
