Changes & Rearranges
The New Butte Falls Tavern
by- Julie Freeman
“ It takes all kinds of people to make
the world go around. Even those who used to
frequent the Butte Falls Tavern. On July 30th,
1S98, Butte Falls saw the end of an era. The
doors closed on the Tavern for good...
Or so they say.”
When I wrote those words two years
ago, I had little idea of how much the closing
of the Tavern would truly effect our small
town.
Oh, life went on. People seemed to
adjust, but a vital social connection was
severed. A part of history was destroyed & a
part of the town lost its heart. For me, it was
like my mother died all over again and no one
could ever make it right.
But time has a way of healing. And
Butte Falls has a way of rearranging &
looking out for its own. People here have
always stood up for what they want & believe
Is right, not only for themselves, but for the
community as a whole.
On Oct. 1st, 2000, the doors to the
relocated Butte Falls Tavern will open. A new
era will begin. Mike & Liz Stritenberg have
been working hard converting the recent
youth center into a place of history & work
manship. Artifacts & memorabilia have been
donated by many to make the new tavern feel
as warm & welcoming as the old.
History will have repeated itself, or
rearranged itself, so to speak. I am told that
the first tavem began it’s illustrious
beginnings on or near the site of the new
tavern.
Of course times have changed. Cork
boots & pistols won ’t be a public nuisance.
Spittoons & gambling won ’t be around to
offend anyone, and there will probably be as
much soda sold as beer. But the atmosphere
& social connections will remain as timeless
as the history of a tavern in Butte Falls.
Though the old Bullwinkle door will
continue to stare timelessly at Ralph, the
stature in the park, and the wonderful old
historical backbar will weather another winter
without admirers, the ghosts of the past, &
those awake after 8:00 P.M. will once again
have a place to go.
You are invited to stop on by and be a
part of history in the making.
