Sara Beck is a name known to most local residents. Some know her as a co-worker, others as a neighbor, many as a friend, but all know her as the Mayor of Butte Falls. Sara originally moved to this area in 1973. In 1977 she moved into Town and began working for the Forest Service. Over the years, her jobs in the Forest Service took her to Idaho, other areas of Oregon, and to Arcata in Northern California. Sara returned to Butte Falls in 1989. While working for the Forest Service she met and married Roger Beck. In 1995 Sara was appointed to fill a vacant City Council position. A few months later she took on the position of Mayor when Alvin Thompson, the former Mayor, resigned to take an out-of-state job. Sara was then re-elected Mayor in November of 1996. Soon after assuming the Mayor’s duties, Sara began writing a monthly column for THE UKULETilKI. In her regular column, the (Soinmei?, she kept the community informed on Council and community issues, thanked community members for their contributions to the Town, and encouraged residents to become involved Citizens. Many community members depend on the Corner to keep them informed on what is happening in their Town. The job of Mayor, which is a volunteer position, is very challenging and demanding. Although there are only a few regularly scheduled meetings each month, Sara has been the I Mayor 24 hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year. It is not unusual for her to receive calls on the weekends or in the middle of the night. One of Sara ’s outstanding qualities is the ability to see the value of progress. Living in this area it is not uncommon to hear someone say, “Irk always been done that way”. For many it is easier to agree than to suggest, or support change. For a community to remain vital, it needs to have a VISION. The community is fortunate that Sara does not settle with doing everything the way it has always been done in the past. She realizes that things don ’t last forever, that change takes place whether we like it or not, or whether it’s even planned for and that plans must be made for the future. Now, as a former Mayor of Butte Falls, Sara will always be remembered for her enthusiastic support for the projects Butte Falls undertook. Sara has succeeded in her desire to make Butte Falls a better place to live. Thank you Sara for your time, your dedication, and all that you have done for this wonderful community!
