Typographical Union reveals that James M.
Lynch has been re-elected preaident. The
vote for Tracy of San Francisco, and Dun
can of New York for vice-president indicates
an extremely close vote, with Duncan elect-
«■d. Secretary-treasurer Hays has been re
elected. For delegate« to the A. F. of L.
Morrison, Hayes McCullough and Steyen-
,8(»n have bet 11 re-elected, with Morrison
leading tiie entire ticket with over 30,000
votes. Miss Wilson. Powell, Wood and
Amt's have Ix'en elected trustees of the
union printers’ home at Colorado Springs.
Roberts of Washington has been elected
agent for the union printers’ home. Tiie
two propositions submitted to increase the
salary of tiie president and secretary-treas
urer to 83,500 per annum have been carried
by a narrow margin.
During the first four months in this year
the Amalgamated Association of Street and
Electric Railway em,»loves has paid out in

cussion of the naval appropriation bill,
which recently passed the House. Mr.
Buchanan is a member of tiie naval atTairs
committee and during the progress of the
consideration of this bill deregatory refer
ence was made by some «if the members on
tiie floor to tiie ¡Militieal attitude assumed by
the American Federation of I.al»or. Re
ferring to this ¡»articular phase of the dis
cussion Mr. Buchanan said:
“Now, something lias ls*en said here

tion of Labor in regard to ids activity in
political affairs. I know something alxnit
that matter. 1 know Mr. Goutpers per
sonally, and respect and admire him for his
brilliant intellect, ruggul honesty, sincerity
of pur,use, and fidelity to a principle and
I know something alx»ut his record as a
tailoring man. Mr. Gompers hesitatixi to
go into politics and when he did go into it,
it was to carry out the demands of a con
ference that was held, if my memory serves
me right, in March. 1907. and which might
lx1 culled a s|»eeial eomention which had
representatives not only of those organiza
tions affiliated with the American Federa
tion of I.alx»r. But tltose that were not
affiliatixi with the American Federation of
I.altor, and I su,»,x»se so far as representa
tion is eoneerneti it was one of the largest
conventions of the laboring people of this
country have ever had . . . The Ameri
can Federation of I.alx»r ne'er lias Ixx-n a
partisan organization. Its political influ
ence has never lx*en used only to support
its friends and oppose its enemies. The
Socialists in the lalx»r movement endeavored
at times to make tiie Federation of Labor a
tool for that political group, but failed.
The American trade union movement has
refused to be the tail of the kite of any politi
cal organization. Mr. Gompers’ political
jx»sition has been the position of organized
labor, and that is what I desire to make
dear to you, that Mr. Gompers should not
la* attacked for what he has done in political
matters unless you attack the trades unions.
N'cause he was carrying out what he had
been instructed to do by the representatives
of the unions, and I think it was a credit to
him to make the political fight he did in
1908. To do so was answering the call of
dutv.”
