T h e F e d e ra tio n of W o m en ’s Clubs of
th e region know n as th e L o u isia n a p u r­
chase has ta k e n a position ad v erse to a
d istin ctiv e e x h ib it a t th e St. L ouis e x ­
position in 1903. In th e reso lu tio n s
passed, th e g round is ta k e n th a t wo­
m a n ’s w ork should be ex h ib ited sid e by
sid e w ith m a n ’s w ork, and judged by
th e sam e s ta n d a rd s. On genera! p r in ­
ciples th is is sound reaso n in g . In a
la rg e n u m b er of n o n-dom estic occupa­
tio n s, in clu d in g a r t and in v en tio n s,
w om en h av e taKen th e ir places a lo n g ­
side m en, and w hile in th e m ain th ey
have not reached th e s ta n d a rd s of men,
w h a t they have done can be e stim a ted
m ore co rrectly w hen it is placed bv th e
sied of w hat m an h as done th a n w hen
ex h ib ited by itse lf in a s e p a ia te b u ild ­
ing, w here rea lly successful pro d u c­
tio n s a re a p t to be lost s ig h t of in a
w ilderness of unsuccessful productions.
T his is n o t said in d e p re c ia tio n of w o­
m en ’s acco m p lish m en ts in th e in d u s­
trie s and a rts , but ra th e r to give fair
recognition of th e ir m erits.
