Where Will We Find A Home
Its nearly two months now that we've been looking for a house. We're
living in a labor camp now but farm work is nearly over. W e're caught,
Raul must get another job, when that happens we have to leave the
camp and we don't have a house.
Raul and Margaret Cantu sat talking about their housing problem.
The Cantu's have seven children and two grandchildren in their house
hold.
They came from Lubbock, Texas to Oregon at the beginning of the
season. Said Raul, "I worked on farms in Texas, seven days a week,
12 hours a day - income $48.00 a week. W e heard that we could make
more money in Oregon, especially if the kids helped us with the work.
"The crops were not good this year, we all worked hard and just broke
even, no savings."
"I've been offered a job, the kids must go to school. W e have to find
a house to make it through the winter."

Hacen dos meses que buscamos una casa. Estamos viviendo en un
campamento pero el trabajo está par terminar. Estamos en un prob
lema. Raúl tiene que buscar otro trabajo. Cuando esto ocurra tendre
mos que abandonar el campamento y no tenemos una casa donde ir.
Raúl y M argaret conversaban sqbre el problema de encontrar
casa. Los Cantu tienen siete niños y dos nietos.
Vinieron de Lubbock, Texas a Oregon cuando comenzó la cosecha.
Dice Raúl, "Yo trabajaba en los campos en Texas, siete días a la
semana, doce horas al día, ganando $48 a la semana. Supimos que en
Oregon se podía ganar mas, sobretodo si los niños ayudaban en el
trabajo. "Las cosechas no fueron buegas este afío. Trabajamos duro
pero lo ganado solo alcanzo para vivir, no para ahorrar." "Me han
ofrecido un trabajo. Los niños deben ir al colegio. Queremos encon
trar una casa para el invierno."

The West Tuality Council of
Churches plans to open their
day care nursery this week. The
year round day care center at
the First Christian Church in
Forest Grove will be open five
days a week, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
This community project grew
out of the combined efforts of
Church groups, responsible citi
zens and VML. Said Judy Coch
ran, VML Day Care Supervisor in
Hillsboro, "It is community effort
that has made day care available
for the children. W e appreciate
all that has been done to make
this center possible."

The committee has formulated
a list of objectives for the Day
Care Program, some of them are:
1. Pre-school preparation for
the children to ease the adjust
ment to the school situation.
2. Day care to allow parents
to devote their individual time
for their own development in
their efforts to be self support
ing.
3. Attendance priorities will be
given to children of adults who
attend classes in adult educa
tion, children of migrant and wel
fare families or low income fami
lies in the community; children
from middle income families if en
rollment of Other is low and the
children are old enough to attend
nursery school.

Tow n Meeting
Independence is seeking the answers; to its comrhunity needs. Oct.
21, at Talmadge Junior High School, .i-a Independence is the day set
aside for the people to meet and voice their opinions abouttheir town.
A Community Congress, sponsored by Pacific Povtfét and Light, pat
terned after the New England town meetings, will be held to discuss
five selected topics. Civic Pride, Parks and Recreations, City Im
provement, Business Facilities and Industrial Development have been
chosen for their urgency.
John Pfaff, chairman of the Congress explained the program. Thirty
minutes of pictures will start the day, tó 'illustrate problems in each
of the five areas. Each person will then select one of five discussion
groups to attend. Panels, made up of residents will lead the open dis
cussion groups to make recommendations or solutions. These recom
mendations will be presented to the entire Congress, who will then
channel them to the group most concerned with the specific problem.
Panel members will insure action on the proposals.
"W e are anxious to have the Spanish 'Speaking méfñ’bers of the area
attend the Congress," said Mr. Pfaff1. 'I t is important to hear each
person's opinion.

dence, es el día en que los habitantes pqdrán opinar sobre los prob
lemas de su ciudad. Se llevará a cabo ur? Congreso de la Comunidad,
auspiciado por la compañía Pacific Power and Light, por el estilo de
las reuniones comunitarias que se efectúan en el estado de New Eng
land, y se discutirán cinco temas. Orgullo Cívico, Citios de Reereay
Parques, Mejoras en I q . Ciudad, y Facilidades para el Desarrollo
Comercial e Industrial son los temas que han sido elegidos por Jd
urgencia que tienen.

crear interés tanto en el hogar como en la comunidad. Queremos que
Independence sea un mejor lugar para vivir y prosperar comercial
