"During the summer months
nearly 7000 migrants come to this
area to work in the fields," said
Ted Schneider, "and our biggest
problem has always been in get
ting around to all of the camps.
This new center w ill be a great
service to the workers in the Jef
ferson area. We hope to get all of
the camps this year."
And we hope that by reading
this newspaper story many farm
workers w ill learn about the new
center, visit it, and take adavantage
of the opportunities available to
them.
WE WON’T RETURN TO OREGON

"In Texas the contractor who
came to hire us promised decent
housing, good wages and a long
work season in Oregon."
"We signed the contract, we
came to Oregon and found what
they had told us was not true."
These words and similar ones
are made by many migratory work
ers now picking crops in Oregon.
The Oregon farmer needs help
to pick his crops. But the workers
w ill not return to help him if they
feel they have been cheated by the
labor contractor. A contractor who
makes false promises to entice
workers to sign his contract is do
ing the farmer a disservice. The
workers w ill come; see the truth
and not return next year.
We know there are growers
who hire their workers through
honest labor contractors. But until
the time when every farmer insists
that no false promises are made by
the labor contractor to get the
workers to Oregon—we w ill have
farm laborers who w ill refuse to
work in Oregon.
Migratory laborers also must ac
cept the responsibility to check
into the promises made by the la
bor contractor. Before signing a
contract, find out the name and
address of the grower you w ill be

The Valley Migrant League base
ball teams had only one game sche
duled for last weekend. The lea
gue leading Woodburn team met
a recently organized farm worker
team from Broadacres. The result
was another win for Woodburn,
this time by a score of 14 to 7.
The photos on this page show
some of the more exciting moments
of the game. The two teams want
to meet again very soon according
to Broadacres coach Alejandro
Munoz.
