This issue of the Opportunity
News began as a gleam in the eye
of Sam Granato, director of VML
Day Care.
When Granato returned from a
visit to his native state of Texas
several weeks ago, he told us his
idea. He believed that many mi
grant workers would like to see a
special issue of the Opportunity
News before they left their home
bases to come to Oregon.
This week, when we assembled
the photos and stories, we discov
ered that we did not have enough
space for all the things we wanted
to print.
Four pages were not
enough.
Even 8 pages were not
enough. Could our staff and print
ers handle a 16-page issue?
At this point, Ralph Cake, the
field supervisor of VML, walked in
to our office and volunteered to
write an article about the Delano
grape strike. Just what we needed!
And so, a few minutes later, we
were rolling on our first 16-page
issue, half o f it in linotype, half on
the typewriter.
We hope you w ill find it interest
ing and useful.—D. W.
