Last Thursday evening the West
Stayton basketball team, coached
by Juan Fernandez, took a short
trip to the Chemawa Indian School,
near Salem. They were a confident
group of boys, and they were look
ing for their fourth win of the sea
son.
But the "braves" from Chemawa
proved to be more than the Stayton
team had planned on. The Che
mawa boys had played nine games
before this one, and they had won
them all.
Stayton dropped behind in the
first quarter, and never really got
going throughout the game. They
played hard, and put on a good
show, but the more experienced
Chemawa boys werp too much for
them.
El jueves pasado por la tarde el
equipo de West Stayton, entrenado
por Juan Fernandez, hizo un viaje
pequeño a la escuela de Chemawa,
cerca de Salem. Eran un grupo de
muchachos confidentes, y buscaban

mawa said he was impressed with
the spirit of the West Stayton team,
and offered to give them a return
game. Captain of the Indian team,
Kee Wilson, agreed that West
Stayton would be a tough foe
after they get a little more exper
ience.
The final score was Chemawa 57,
West Stayton 41.

quarter the game was tied up 22-
22, but then Independence began
to move. They pulled out in front
by ten points, and the final tally
was 32-22 Independence.
Coach Chris Bernard says he is
now ready to face the West Stayton
team, which has beaten them three
games in a row.

uel Younge^ 21-, was shot to death.
The shooting took place in Tusko-
gee, Alabama, January 4th. The
dead boy's father said: "This is' an
age of social c h a n g e . In such
change people sacrifice their lives."
Robert C. Weaver is the first
Negro to serve in the U.S. Cabinet.
He w ill head the new Department
of Housing and Urban Develop
ment. This is important and d iffi
cult work. Mr. Weaver's job w ill
become even more important be
cause President Johnson has plans
to rebuild entire central and slum
areas in some of our cities.

India's new Prime Minister is
Mrs. Indira Gandhi. She was elect
ed Wednesday to r e p la c e Mr.
Shastri who died earlier this month.
Mrs. Gandhi is the daughter of
the late Jawaharlal Nehru, former
Prime Minister of India.
Two U.S. jet planes crashed into
each other and burned over the
coast of Spain. One was a B52 jet,
the other a jet tanker. At least five
men out of both crews of 11 men
were killed.
