On a morning show August 11, KMUN interviewed
the Astoria Regatta princesses. They represent the youth and
energy that we all admire.
However, there was one disturbing aspect to the inter
view The host asked his guests to give their thoughts on U S.
involvement in Iraq. Two of the princesses felt we needed to
be there as a result of Iraq’s involvement with the Twin Tower's
attacks of 9/11.
It was disturbing that after all these years much of our
population still believes Iraq was involved with this act of terror.
Not only has there been no proof of this, all credible sources
have discredited this idea. Even the current administration has
long since backed off this erroneous claim.
Yet this popular belief still exists. By current polls, as
much as 50% of the population still believes Iraq was involved
in the 9/11 attack. There are two reasons for this: 1) our current
administration has effectively drilled it into the public mind, and
2) the major news media have never bothered to counter this
claim advocated by our President.
How healthy can any democracy be with such slanted
news media?
