ASTORIA DOORWAYS
Lynn Johnson started working on pen and ink drawings of the “wonderful houses”
when she first moved to Astoria in the late 1980s. She soon became “more interested
in the doorways and entrances themselves." Windows and doorways have always held
a fascination for her, she says. “So I decided to focus on the doorways so as to get
people to really see them as an interesting part of the everyday world.” She wants
people to “look at the door for the first time, even though they may have walked by it
or through it a hundred times.” Her drawings are reprinted here from a calendar she
put together for 2003 from doorways she has drawn over the past 15 years, a variety
of which have appeared in the NCTE twice before, in June 1992 and December 1993.
