NORTH COAST TIMES E A G L E , OCTO/NOVO 2002
FRANK MANGELSDORF
I feel war with Iraq is inevitable. The big argument
has been that we shouldn't invade Iraq until we go through
Congress, the UN and the coalition. People are right to say
we should do that. Nobody’s arguing that we shouldn’t. Every
body agrees with the steps to be taken, that there should be
resolutions and restrictions. Henry Kissinger says we should
disarm Iraq without war; most Arab nations support that — but
they will support armed intervention if Iraq refuses. Even Ted
Kennedy said we should have debates in Congress and the
UN, then go in if necessary.
If you assume Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass
destruction and connections with Al Qaida, most of the world will
say something must be done about it. If we have a compelling
national interest I believe we should go in unilaterally — actually
we have a coalition, not a very big one, but we have Britain and
the Saudis if the UN passes a resolution to disarm Iraq.
Saddam Hussein is a psychopath who has to go. Some
people are against that, but they're not realistic
JENNIFER BAKKE
I think war is morally wrong — people killing people.
If we are as civilized as we claim to be, there should be other
solutions to the problem. It is amazing how we can be so loving
to other Americans but not care about the suffering of other
peoples we are destroying. We fail to see them as human
beings who have the same needs we do.
DONNA JOY (aka D.J.) DUEFFEL
I don’t think we should do it because it's wrong and
people will be hurt like in the Civil War.
LILY DUEFFEL
I think you shouldn’t have war because people have lost
their lives in it. We should all be free from war.
HAYDEN DUEFFEL
War is bad.
(Donna Joy and Lily Dueffel are 7 year old twin sisters.
Their brother Hayden is 5. Jennifer Bakke and Tom Dueffel are
their parents.)
CHRIS GRANT
It is all being orchestrated for oil. I think it’s been in the
works for years. I think there are greater threats than Saddam
Hussein and terrorism to our country and the world that need to
be addressed — specifically, the planet is committing environ
mental suicide.
GILLIAN HALL
It is terrifying. And the question “What do you think of
the pending war?" is inaccurate. This is not a pending war; this is
a war. We have been bombing Iraq for years. Why even bother
RITA CORBIN
asking the Senate and the House for permission? It is now
merely conduct and paperwork.
What I want to know — who is the puppeteer? Who is
really in charge here? George W. Bush? There is no way he can
be any more than a figurehead (and what a figurehead he is!).
Who in God’s name is running things behind the scenes?
Whose agenda are we fighting for?
My personal opinion is this: The instigators of the war
want Saddam out of power, but we have no idea who to put in
power once he has been removed. Has anyone heard mention
of a successor for Saddam? How can we assure anything would
change if Saddam were removed?
I have found no answers.
Why? Why this war? Why any war?
NO U.S. ATTACK ON IRAQ
These Oregon North Coast residents are opposed to war against
Iraq and urge others who share that view to let Congress know
their feelings before it is too late to stop the impending invasion
and the enormous loss of lives both American and Iraqi ■

PETER HUHTALA
The situation of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was that
we were erroneously led to believe American servicemen were
under attack — the current situation is far different and far more
ethically reprehensible if we go forward with what is proposed for
Iraq.
Never in U.S. history have we unprovokedly attacked
another nation in order to change its regime — its leadership
The unabashed suggestion we do such a thing would taint us
for times to come.
AMY CODISPOTI
It is not un-American to question President Bush’s
motives for proposing war on Iraq. It is not un-American to be
the dissident voice. It is, however, running against every grain
our country supposedly stands for to sit idly by and passively
support its push toward war, earning the title “number 1 rogue
nation."
Law. not force, is what our foreign policy must be based
one.
LOUIS ALVIS
I feel this already begun war — air raids now for years
— is a start to a dark chapter for America. But it could be an
opportunity for concerned Americans to make fundamental
repairs. If we dare, we can change. If not, this war is the opening
act of a dark dark play.
KAREN MELLIN
I realize that if there is a theme for this nightmare of
the last year since 9/11, it is that the Bush administration has
highkacked the whole country and is ready to slam it into the
Middle East. Like those captives on the airliners that crashed
into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, we really aren't
being given a choice about the Bush administration crashing
this plane.
I think those in charge are every bit as crazy as those
who highjacked the planes. There is really very little difference;
and ditto for the economy — the corporations have highjacked
our livelihoods and pretty much the planet as well.
We’re all left without a voice. They’ve got us. We’re in
the same place as the people on those planes In other words,
we can’t get out. Reasoning with the Bushies is certainly out of
the question.
