NORTH COAST TIMES E A G L E , MARPRIL 2002
CL EARCUT USA
I am working on a photographic essay about Northwestern trees. In observance of the Lewis
& Clark bicentennial it is to be entitled Turning Back: What Stands? The answer is of course that most
of what stands now is the monoculture of industrial forestry, sustained by chemicals and harvested by
clearcutting.
The essay is in part to honor the memory of my father, Ross Adams, who many times stood
before the Astoria City Council to ask that the city not clearcut its forests. One of the things that
concerned him about clearcutting was the effect it has on people’s spirits. How conducive the practice
is to a general attitude of contempt. How poisonous, in this respect, it is for children.
If that concern seems unwarranted, walk for awhile in clearcuts. Those on Humbug Mountain,
where these pictures were taken, offer a fair sample. Take the turnoff marked for Saddle Mountain on
Highway 26 and drive 2.9 miles. On the right, through a “beauty screen” you will see where to begin.
