Larry Curry and daughter, Summer, both from Haines, deserve our many thanks. Larry served six years in the United States Navy as a navigator on the U.S.S. Point Defiance, during the Vietnam War. Sum mer served twenty plug years in the United States Army. She served tours in Afghanistan, Iraq, and South Korea, just to name a few. Today, the father and daughter team con tinue that dedication by volunteering time at the Haines Cemetery, placing flags on the graves of those who have served, and raising the larger flags on Memorial Day. The Record Courier gives our heart-felt thanks to them, and all who have and con tinue to serve this nation. A Day of Wildlife and Wind Power for South Baker Sixth-Graders - Story and photos submitted by Amber Martell Wed., May 26 was a day away from the desks for sixth-graders from South Baker Intermediate School. Two busses were loaded with eager students, their teachers, at least one para-professional and a couple of parent-volunteers. The para-professional made a comment above the excited din on the bus saying that while the children were active now, they would surely be sound asleep for the trip back. How we underestimated the boundless energy of youth! We traveled up Highway 84 to North Powder, where the busses took the exit and rattled through the small town and out into the cattle-strewn country beyond. At the wind farm, the two busses parted ways temporarily and we continued on through Pyles Canyon toward Union. After finishing the roller-caster ride that is Pyles Canyon and getting a good look at Hot Lake, we turned off the highway into the Ladd Marsh area. Several students exclaimed at the fact that we were now on a dirt road and their attention focused eagerly on the dusty route ahead.
