i Record-Courier « 4 THURSDAY, MAY 26,2016 WIRTH continued from page 1 brook Care Facility in Baker City. A Graveside serv ice was held on May 19,2016 at 10 a.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Baker City. Lila was bom on Oct. 2, 1925 to Ethel Cogswell Stolsing in Stockton, Calif. On February 11, 1941, Lila was married to Kenneth Leroy Westrope in Vancouver, Wash.; they were married for 54 years before Kenneth's passing in 1995. Before retiring in 1990, Lila worked as a cook for St. Elizabeth Hospital and the Powder River Correc tional Facility. She was employed by St. Elizabeth for 25 years. Lila also worked as a sales clerk for the Big V department store. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking (she made some of the best homemade pies!), reading, and spending time with her family at the cabin. Lila was a member of the Nazarene Church, the V.F.W. Ladies Auxillery, and the Cowbells in Bend, Ore. Lila had many proud accomplishments in her life, but her most treasured were: being married to Kenneth for 54 years, working at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 25 years, and having a green thumb with the ability to grow her flower garden beautifully. Lila is survived by her daughter Susan and husband Marc Mansholt of Baker City, son Ken Westrope, Jr. D.V.M. and wife Pam of Ephrata, Wash., grandaugh- ter Savannah Wellman of Baker City, and grandson Ian Westrope of Seattle, Wash. She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Westrope Sr., her sister Leota Swafford, her brother Delmar Stolsing, and her friend Curt Medlin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart 'N' Home Hospice through Coles Tribute Center at 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814. Sturgill Wedding Dress To the Editor: I saw the picture of Sadie Leep Sturgill's wedding dress in your past issue, and did a little research in our iamily tree written by David A. Sturgill in 1993 and also at ancestry.com. I found out that Sadie was bom Feb. 15, 1868 in Milan, Missouri. No information on her parents. She married Johnathan Sturgill Nov. 3, 1885. He was bom July 29,1862 in Missouri and crossed the plains with his parents, George and Lyda White Sturgill in the spring of 1865. George was the wagon master of the train. Sadie and On this particularly bad day, I was really looking forward to spending time with her. I remember it was a horrible day at school and I couldn't wait to get away and spend time with grandma. I wanted to completely forget about my day, and not even mention it, but when I was around grandma, I always had this tendency to share everything with her - almost uncontrollably. I think I just knew that it was a safe place and I could. We were sitting at her dining table when she asked me about school. I told her that my day had actually been not so great. Usual teenage girl drama, of course, but to her, it was devastating news. She looked at me as though she had been hurt by the situation even more than I, and she said to me, "I don't know how people can be so mean. I just don't understand it." She said, "Honey, just focus on school and your grades. Don't pay attention to them and don't listen to a word they say. You will go far and you will be so much better for it. And if they don't quit, just tell them all to go to hell! Pardon my French!" I'm pretty sure all of the the bad words I ever heard my grandmother say can found in the Bible, but I loved it when she cursed. It didn't even sound like cursing. That might be what made this such a memorable conversation...but that was the most amazing pep talk I have ever heard. Her words carried me through the rest of the day, and through so many more to come. Spending time with grandma was like ther apy. Only better. Way, way better. In therapy, they tell you how to fix your problems. But with grandma, it was everyone else who has the problems, and there was nothing about you that needed to be fixed. Johnathan had three children: Sylvia Snider (1888- ?), Gladys Fisher (1893-1977), and Frank Sturgill (1888-1931). Sadie, was Johnathan's first wife and died Nov. 3, 1895 in Baker or Wingville. Barbara Duckworth was his second wife. I am Blair Sturgill's wife. He is the son of Kenneth and Barbara Sturgill of Baker City. Kenneth was the son of Cecil and Jessie Sturgill. Cecil was the son of William and Virginia Adeline Talley Sturgill. William and George were brothers and both settled in the Wingville area. .
