outside the box to solve a
problem.

Hicks have been doing just that
for JR Streifel, owner of
Grumpy's Repair. Streifel has
been trying to find qualified
auto mechanics without much
success
using
traditional
means and sought the help of
Baker
County
Economic
Development.
Smith did some research and
decided to make an inquiry at
Portland Community College
(PCC) because of their strong
Automotive Service and Repair
Technology program. He and
Streifel traveled to PCC and
the results seem promising.
"Not only do we believe we
found highly trained candidates
for JR, but this also has the
promise of bringing young
families to Baker with kids.

owners in Baker but will also
help schools by adding a few
more kids to the enrollment
which is a good thing," says
Smith.

relationships can be built with
their different program offerings.

Anew video highlighting the Baker Technical In
stitute debuted Tuesday on "The Promise of Ore
gon" website atwww.promiseoregon.org.
The Baker School District opened the institute in
August 2014. It includes career pathways in con
struction, industrial and engineering systems,
health services and agriculture. In addition to its
offerings in career and technical education (CTE),
the institute emphasizes science and math skills.
The institute was founded on the dual premise
of preparing students for the workforce and cre
ating economic development in a small commu
nity.

The Baker video is the third of four planned
videos for 2016 showcasing cutting-edge pro
grams -- science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM), CTE, the arts and more.
The videos encourage schools and the public to
"dream bigger4' about what is possible in Oregon's
schools.
The "Promise" campaign, which Is being run by
the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA),
aims to create a groundswell of public support for
K-14 education, in hopes of meeting Oregon's 40-
40-20 goals and lifting student achievement and
graduation rates.
OSBA is a member services organization for
more than 200 locally elected boards serving
school districts, education service districts and
community colleges. It also provides services to
charter schools and their boards.
