Haines 1901 ~ Haines, Baker County, Oregon FFA Rocks State By Gina Perkins Baker and North Powder FFA Chapter members performed ex ceptionally well at the State Convention held March 18-21 in Cor vallis at Oregon State University. 27 students from Baker competed in FFA events and 11 competed from North Powder, according to North Powder advisor, Seth Bingham. North Powder FFA took first place in Beginning Parliamentary Procedure with team members including Samuel Pointer, Logan Nedrow, Sonora Blair, Raimey Brown, Hollie Minor, and Skylar Blakenship. State FFA Degree recipients included: Tyler Hufford of North Powder, Bryson Thomas, Taylor Hawes, Raelin Davis, Kourtney Lehman, Mitch Simonis, Ashlee Brinton, and Rory Scilacci, all of Baker. Baker was also first place in State for Ag Marketing. The team was comprised of Melissa Foltz, Kourtney Lehman and Morgan Scilacci. Lehman also was the first place winner in the Job Interview Competition and Prepared Speaking. Sheriff's Race Decided in General Election The two man race for Baker County Sheriff will be decided in November by all registered voters in Baker County. Be cause the race is non-partisan and be cause there are two candidates, Sheriff Travis Ash and John Hoopes both will au tomatically advance to the general elec tion. Ash was appointed unanimously last spring after Mitch Southwick's resignation. Southwick recommended Ash be ap pointed to fill the remainder of his term and after a very public interview process which included a lengthy questionnaire, Com missioners Harvey, Kerns, and Bennett agreed- In Southwick's Feb. 2015 press release he stated, "Being the Sheriff is a very re sponsible arid important position to hold. The Sheriff must be available to the citi zens who they work for while also being fi nancially accountable as well....Lieutenant Ash has been a valued employee of the Sheriff’s Office since 2005 with several years experience before that time. He is an exceptional police officer and effective leader and will continue to lead the Sher iff’s Office in a positive direction." Ash has 20 years experience in law en forcement. 10 of those years have been spent with the Baker County Sheriff's De partment serving as a PatrQl Lieutenant, Drug Recognition Expert, SWAT member, Patrol Sergeant, Reserve Academy i|jr structor^ Detective, and eight years as a Patrol Deputy. He spent eight years with the Prineville Police Department and in addition to serving as a Patrol Officer and Drug Detection Expert, was a School Re source Officer, Field Training Officer, was on Mounted Patrol, a Defensive Tactics In structor, Armorer, DITEP instructor, CERT member, and Oregon State Police cadet. He also was a reserve deputy in the Wal lowa County Sheriff's Office. Ash has been awarded the Harold R. Berg Life Saving Award by the Oregon Peace Officer's Association and the Red Cross Law Enforcement Heroes Award. See SHERIFF on page 9 See VIDEO on page 2 Submitted photo Sheriff Travis Ash All Kids Rodeo Saturday Following the Easter Egg Hunt in Geiser-Pollman Park in Baker City which starts at 10 a.m., there will be another fun event for kids. The 17th Anhual All Kids Rodeo is sponsored by the Baker County Shrine Club and bpgins at about 11 a.m. in the show barn of the Fairgrounds. Registration begins at 10 a.m. The events are open to all cowboys and cowgirls between the ages of 4-14. There is no entry fee, but registration is required. Admission for adults is $5. Games and events include: Wild cow milking, dummy roping, stick horse races, balloons with prizes scramble, mutton busting, sack races and one other fun event. There will be door prizes and a free hot dog lunch. All kids will be winners and there will be awards and prize money. With the ex ception of the mutton busting for kids under 65 pounds, the contests do not require the ability to ride animals. Each event will be explained and demonstrated and the rules easy to understand. Awards will be given at the end of each event. The Shriners raise funds to help kids with orthopedic and burn care.
