Beleek Pottery Show and Tell
at Mutual Improvement Club
The Mutual Improvement Club met at the Fel
lowship Hall of the Methodist Church with Ruth
Cole as hostess. 15 members and two guests
attended. Because it is the season, Ruth
Coles spoke about Ireland and what that coun
try brings to mind. One of the things is Beleek
Pottery, a factory built in 1858 to take advan
tage of the perfect mix of soil components to
make clay and a river to drive the material
crusher. JoAnn Britton displayed pieces of her
large collection of Beleek porcelain and pro
vided a chart to identify manufacture dates
from the different hallmarks on them. She also
told the history, supplemented by other mem
bers’ experience. A majority of members pres
ent had traveled to Ireland. Evelyne Fisher
brought a beautiful quilt made and embroi
dered by Club members in 1965 that they raf
fled off and her husband, Elbert Fisher won.
Sheila Holman also shared the quilt she just
finished that was all hand colored and hand
quilted. The Cookbook Committee is making
progress, having turned over two categories of
recipes for word processing. It was decided to
order 200 copies of the cookbooks when fin
ished. The Club voted to support the Haines
Stampede in their project to cover the west
grandstand and to donate to the Haines Easter
Egg hunt for the children of Haines. They also
purchased a trophy for the Jr. Sheep Show
manship contest at the Baker Jr. Show. Eve
lyne reported that Christy Wise, the
granddaughter of Champ and Lois Bond, long
time Haines folks, has recovered from losing
a leg in a boating accident in Florida and is
back as an Air Force Captain flying cargo
planes. She has three interchangeable artifi
cial limbs. We will be mailing military care
packages in April, please call 541 377-5795 if
you have addresses for local service men and
women. The Club will have items for the
Haines City Yard Sale May 7, 2016 at the cor
ner of Second and Cole St. If you have items
to sell, drop them off, PRICED, any time before
then. The Club will take cookies to Meadow
brook for the funeral reception of longtime
Haines businessman Silven Calhoun. The
April meeting will be held at the home of Mar-
gory Peck on Neill-Peck Lane with Co-Hostess
Viola Perkins and Carol Proebstel.

Rowe and Arendell Lead
Friends of Haines
Garla Rowe, owner of the
Haines Sellrite and Alita
Arendell were elected Secre-
tary/Treasurer and President,
respectively, for Friends of
Haines. The two have been very
involved in many aspects,
especially the fundraising and
now will be leading the organiza
tion. They are actively seeking
new members and invite anyone
who might like to be involved or
has a new idea they’d like to
discuss to contact them.
The annual Steak Feed and
Auction has been set for May 14
at the Frontier Restaurant. There
will be a silent and live auction
and donations are being sought.
This a major fundraiser for the
fireworks display on July 4. Cash
donations are also greatly
appreciated. Talk with Garla at
the store to find out how you can
help. The ladies have been work
ing hard to secure the Elk’s Drum
and Bugle Corps to perform that
evening...keep your fingers
crossed. They are always so
enjoyable.

Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday,
March 26 in Haines at the

again be leasing the property
adjacent to the sewer pond. The
City came to an agreement with
Aldrich at last week's City
Council meeting. Aldrich has
agreed to pay $20 per acre.
Haines Steak House Swamped
Saturday night was extra busy
for the Haines Steak House-
which is great. A party of about
30 who had traveled to Halfway
for the 50th Annual Crab Feed,
unfortunately, learned they
would not be fed because they'd
run out of crab. They chose to
drive to Haines and celebrate the
evening with a great meal here.
The Steak House is seeking a
part-time server. If you are
interested, give Lois a call at
541-856-3639.
