Powder Valley Boys Fall
to Joseph and Nixyaawii
By Sam Stephens
On Friday the Badgers met up with Joseph on the Eagles home
court and although they beat them convincingly earlier in the
season, the tides turned.
: The Badgers started out with the lead, but as the night went on
;the Eagles took over and it seemed as though Powder Valley
couldn't get any momentum back. Joseph was ready for the
Badgers and let them know it with a 49-41 loss for PV.
• Saturday was no different for the boys. It seemed as though
Eagles were the Badgers kryptonite for the weekend. Although
the Powder Valley Boys played much better against Nixy than the
:night before in Joseph, it just wasn't quite good enough. They fell
:to a second Eagle team 59-51.
Although the loses were irritating to the boys, they know that
•there will be another chance for redemption at the district tourna
ment and they look forward to the chance to play these two teams
again.
; Come to North Powder and watch the Badgers play against
Helix on Friday. On Saturday they will be traveling to Echo.

Bulldogs Beat La Grande
in Double Over Time
By Eden Taylor
The La Grande at Baker boys' basketball game on Jan. 29, will
go down in Baker basketball history as one of the most exciting
games in recent years. The game showed the true tenacity of the
Bulldogs and the shear will to do what it takes to win.
There was no doubt that after losing to the Bulldogs on Jan. 15
on their home court by a score of 51 -36, the La Grande Tigers came
to Baker ready to humble the Dawgs and avenge their loss. For
over three quarters, it looked like the Tigers would do just that.
After falling behind early, the Bulldogs came back to tie the game
at 12 by the end of the first quarter. Then the Tigers took the lead
and continued to increase it until they led 32-21at halftime. The
Bulldogs still failed to cut much of the lead in the third quarter, but
scored 13 to La Grande's 10.
The game remained frustrating for the Baker fans until there were
six minutes left in the game. TJ Dunn hit two three-pointers to spark
the Bulldog comeback. Two baskets by Logan Sand and critical
free throws by Teancum Taylor and Brad Zemmer, actually gave
Baker a one-point lead with just over 30 seconds left in the game.
La Grande took back the lead, but Sand drove the ball to the basket
and layed the ball in as the buzzer sound. The score was 57-57 and
the went into overtime.
The teams battled to a ties of 60 and 62, Baker had a chance,
but their shots fell short. La Grande's Andrew Peasley grabbed the
rebound and started to dribble down court when a foul was called
with .5 second left in the overtime period. Peasley was put on the
free throw line, needing only to make one of the two free throws to
win the game. Baker could do nothing. The crowds cheered until
the sound was deafening. Peasley missed the first shot and the in
tensity doubled. The second shot dropped out, the buzzer sounded,
and the game went into its second overtime.
Because of injuries and Zemmer and Berry fouling out, Baker had
to use injured Bryson Smith to fill out their team of five on the court.
Peasely fouled out early in the second overtime with 17 points. Tay
lor, Smith, and TJ Dunn made free throws to give the Bulldogs the
lead. Capped off with a basket by Jake Gentili, Baker won the game
70-64, and as they say, "the crowd went wild!"
A wave of pink fans (it was breast cancer awareness night),
flooded the court and ecstasy prevailed among the players,
coaches and fans.
The Baker boys had given their heart and soul to the fourth quarter
and overtime periods. They left everything on the floor. They rec
ognized the challenge and rose to meet it. Logan Sand put up 27
of the points, with 15 rebounds and 3 assists. Zemmer scored 13
points. Taylor and Dunn each had 12 points. Taylor had made eight
of eight freethrows at critical times in the game and ended with eight
for 12 from the line. Smith was two for two from the free throw line
in the final overtime for two points. Drew Story's two free throws
and Gentili's basket each gave the Bulldogs two points at critical
times.
The Bulldogs remain on top of the GOL with two league games
