4 i Record-Courier THURSDAY, JANUARY 21,2016 Editorial Chamber Hosts Top Notch Banquet Z>y Gina Perkins Photos by Gina Perkins A sold out crowd enjoyed the Chamber Ban quet on Saturday at the Sunridge Inn. All of the winners were outstanding at Saturday night's annual Cham ber of Commerce Banquet. The Chamber itself and new executive di rector, Shelly Cutler, are to be included on that list. After only a few days on the job, Cutler pulled off what is considered by many as one of the best award banquets in several years. Cutler received rousing applause from the crowd when she was for mally introduced by board Chairman, Cheryl Martin, signaling their ex citement about a new chapter for the Chamber. Every aspect of the event was well done from the table decor, to the meal and service by the Sun ridge Inn staff, and the introduction of new activities during the evening. The event was well organized and there was good representation from much of the county. People who attended had fun. They were excited to be there and a positive energy was in the room. The winners of the awards all spoke of their love of Baker County and are a sample of the selfless volunteer work done by a substantial group of dedicated community members who worked quietly under the radar each day to make this a wonderful place to live. This is a great start to the New Year for Baker County. I have renewed my membership to the Baker County Chamber of Commerce and I en courage you to consider doing the same. Great job, Chamber! We continue to be asked when the standoff at the Mal heur Wildlife Refuge will end, and which agency will make that decision. We'd like to clar- ify the jurisdictional situation. The FBI is in charge of mak ing and implementing plans to end the siege. The FBI has ju risdiction over the armed takeover of the federal build ings in the refuge, as well as any crimes committed therein. Questions about the standoff should addressed by the FBI, which continues to work dili gently towards a peaceful solu tion. Meanwhile, Sheriff Ward and other local law enforcement agencies are directly address ing militia activities outside the wildlife refuge -- including the well-chronicled harassment and intimidation of residents, federal employees and law en forcement by militia members and associates. OSSA stands proud in say ing that Sheriff Ward has done a commendable job fulfilling his oath as Sheriff and defending his community. Sheriff Ward has made every effort to peacefully defuse the situation and return normalcy to the res idents he serves. He has worked tirelessly with his fellow law enforcement partners to develop strategies to protect and serve Harney County while the FBI continues its in vestigation. OSSA and its law enforce ment partners will continue to offer support to Sheriff Ward and his team until this situation is resolved. We couldn't be prouder of the work he has done to serve Harney County and Oregon. Am I the cutest little guy or what? My name is Jackson and I am a male Dachs hund, perhaps a mix. It was determined that I am about months old because I still have all my tiny "needle" teeth. I am doing very well living in a foster home with two adults, one very cute little female Yorkie and some cats. My foster mom is teaching me about manners, walking on a leash, first commands and of course potty training. Even though I am still a little nervous in my new home, I am enjoying the attention and all the love. I weigh about 8 pounds right now and if I am exercised and have a healthy diet, I should not get to be a very big dog. I will make a great family pet for adults or a family with children. I do require a secure fenced yard for my safety and exercise. I will have my first vaccinations and be ready for adoption. I am not neutered, but there will b an adoption agreement requiring that I be neutered at 6 months. If you would like to learn more about me or want an adoption application, please call Best Friends or Carmen at 541-519-4530.
