10 Is this Really What we Want the Perception of Eastern Oregon to be? I am in no way downplaying the serious nature of the situation in Harney County. However, I think we also need to remember in a culture where "majority rules," just how ridiculous this is viewed by some. The combined population of Harney and Baker County is roughly 23,185. The maximum seating capacity of Autzen Stadium at the University of Oregon is 54,000. Below are some thoughts, posts, titles of articles and Twitter comments from some outside the area who find Ammon Bundy and his armed cohorts' take over of an unarmed bird sanctuary utterly stupid. Is this really what we want the perception of eastern Oregon to be? Below is a facebook message (a plea for warm socks and snacks) from Jon Ritzheimer one of the armed militiamen "pre pared to stay at the Wildlife Refuge for years" along with just some of the responses it has generated. Jon Ritzheimer: History will be made here in Burns, OR. 2016 will be a great year for America. God Bless America and' God Bless those, willing to stand for freedom. We are not asking for money so if you can send supplies or anything that will help the militia and those taking a stand then please send it to: General Mail Jon Ritzheimer or Blaine Cooper Burns, OR 97720 We will humbly accept monetary donations at www. rogueinfidel, com. Again, not asking for money and care packages would be greatly appreciated. Things we could use: cold weather socks snacks energy drinks equipment for cold weather snow camo gear anything you think will help. Thank you all for the support. The Oregon 'Militia' Needs Food, So I Mailed Them Pictures Of It A picture is worth a thousand words. It tastes like paper, though. - Aaron Nemo, Comedy Writer Huffington Post Members of the armed group occupying a federal building on an Oregon wildlife refuge posted a plea on Facebook for care packages containing "snacks." It's an important reminder that if you want to overthrow the government, always start in a city that has GrubHub. And remember, these folks are choosing to hold slumber par ties at this remote location miles away from the nearest Papa John's. They are willingly putting themselves in a problematic situation to gain attention from the media, and aren't actually in need of charitable food donations like many Americans who find themselves below the poverty level. That's why I've decided to do everything in my power not to help. I hope you can find it in your hearts to do the same. Step 1: Find or take some photos of delicious food. Make sure you're capturing everything in high-definition to optimize the visceral reaction. Step 2: Go to FedEx. You know, the company from "Castaway." Step 3: Print out color photos on glossy paper. Don't be a cheapskate by printing in black and white (unless, of course, it's a photo of Oreos). Step 4: Put the photos into a manila envelope. Yummm ... rhymes with vanilla. Step 5: Address manila envelope to Jon Ritzheimer, General Mail, Burns, OR 97720. Step 6: Throw in some spoilers from "The Bachelor" Step 7: Mail it. It's like sending an email but with actual energy exertion. Step 8: Donate to a food bank. There are hungry people out there who aren't just being jerks. Baker/Powder Valley had Culver on the run all weekend as weplayedlootand mouse J the lead going into the championship rounds We were down by a half point, Baker with six in the finals, Culver with seven Two of the matches were Baker vs Culver at 138lbs Marco Vela vs Jorge Oliveira and Clay Keller vs Saxton Schaffner at 145lbs Jace Hays started us off at 120lbs vs 2x state champion Ryan Smith (son of Greg Smith Baker County Devel opment Director) of Heppner. Hays beat Smith last season 7-0, but this time it was a real battle from the beginning all the way to the end, with Smith winning 7-5. , .... . .. ... . . . AULJ At 126lbs James AhHee faced Zack ware of Ontario. Ware woke AhHee up nght at the beginning, but AhHee was able to counter him and then dominated him on the ground for tte 9-0 win. !«-:„« h., f-u Elijah Banister at 132 faced Jeff Kovach of Ontario and got caught in the first round by Kovach losing by fall. Vela avenged a loss from earlier this year as he built a 7-1 lead over Mac-Hi's Rifey Chester and was able to hang on for the win. Vela then lost a hard fought battle to Oliveira with a score of 2-0. Vela nearly scored the first takedown, but Oliveira's defense was pretty good and he countered for the takedown. They both rode each other out in the second and third rounds. ............. . * . Clay Keller at 145lbs pinned and tech failed his way to the finals. He went after Schaffner but got caught by a nice lift and lost by fall. ... ... . . ... , Will Goodwin also went on the attack as he went after Gregory Moreno of Mac-Hi. Moreno won by fall in the third We were really happy with our performance as he had Culver on the run. However, Culver was able to take a comfortable lead after they won most of their championship bouts. We need to work on a few small things and it's time to boost our conditioning, so that we have enough fuel in the gas tank to win those championship, bouts. By all means, mercilessly mock those dopey hicks who claim to want to spark a revolution against tyranny by taking control of an empty bird sanctuary in Middle of Nowhere, Oregon." "There’s so much material already there to work with, including the signs emblazoned with fiery slogans they’ve posted to warn people off — slogans with, of course, multiple misspellings — and social media pleas for “snacks” that they apparently forgot to pack, despite claims that they plan to occupy the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge for years. There’s the comically melodramatic “goodbye” videos posted by these idiots to their families — their oath to protect this land •has to come first, after all — and the predictable fracturing of the group's conspiracy theorist support network, part of which has declared that this whole takeover is nothing more than a false flag operation. All of it is deserving of a Nelson-from-The Simpsons-style point and laugh — except of course for the one lingering issue that hangs over this entire thing like an ominous black cloud." The Baker chapter members have practiced various clinical practicums as well as handling and restraints. Eight out of the 50 practicums were put to the test. In cluded in the Career Development Event (CDE), is a math section. The team must complete this part using conversions and real veterinary science problems. The writing portion of Vet Science consists of a sce nario that a veterinarian might find in the workplace. The FFA member must then find a solution and write a summary of how the problem is solved within a limited amount of time. Finally, the team of five must present a team presentation in less than 15 minutes in front of several judges. The presentation topic varies every year. The topic chosen for this year was Salmonellosis. The Baker FFA has practiced the team problem prior to competition, but must be knowledgeable about the given idea of salmonellosis for any questions that may be asked by the judges. Overall, the Baker FFA Vet Sci ence team took home 7th place. The top two individuals were Dani McCauley at 13th and Gussie Cook at 25th out of a total 75 FFA member from across the state of Oregon. The Vet Science team went home with more experience in the field of Veterinary Science and are excited to compete next year. Baker FFA Compete in Salesmanship, Customer Service and Job Interviewing Submitted by Baker FFA Chapter Reporter, Melissa Foltz Baker FFA members polished their skills in sales manship, customer service, and job interviewing to pre pare for the District Agriculture Sales Career Development Event, also hosted by the Baker FFA on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Ag Sales consists of multiple sections such as cus tomer relations, telephone, prospecting, advertising, sales presentation, and job interview. FFA members worked through the separate practicums whether it was solving a problem for a customer, ordering products over the phone, or even reaching out to a potential cus tomer. For some, this is a familiar experience, but for the greenhand teams, this is a brand new atmosphere. The Job Interview competition was held in conjunc tion with the District Ag Sales event. 16 individuals participated in this event and competed for the top six positions which will move on to the District's in Feb ruary. Throughout the day, the Baker FFA members were able to use their knowledge of not only sales, but ex perience in agriculture as well. At the end of the com petition-filled day, the Baker Chapter brought home two second place banners for both the greenhand and advanced teams.
