i Record-Courier 4 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31,2015 Mark Luker and LeAnne Woolf sumptervolunteers@gmail.com or 541-894-2303, leannemywo@gmail.com How much has it been snowing in Sumpter? Enough, it seems, that Oregon Department of Transportation felt a need to arrange for front end loaders to clear intersections. Great masses of snow were moved from the highway at Austin and Auburn to the west ends of each street. It still isn’t possible to see oncom ing traffic from the stop signs, but you don’t have to pull out onto the pavement anymore to see if it’s safe to enter the highway. Speaking of snow berms and how much snow there is, when ever possible give yourself a little extra space. Not even four-wheel drive low is going to get you out if you slide into a snow pile up to your door handles or higher. Also, groomed snowmobile trails are not compatible with wheels. At least two visitors have had to be pulled out of the trail across Soda Mountain’s parking lot, one a crew cab pickup after the pa rade on Dec. 13 and this week a Durango. Could be folks are a lit tle out of practice dealing with this much snow. Calendar (as of Dec. 27) HAPPY 2016! Over 400 miles of snowmobile trails have already been groomed, and many of the locals have been out on their sleds. There are patches of powder that can swallow shorter- tracked machines and a few downed trees. See the Record-Courier online at www. therconline.com Haines Sellrite Last week when I wrote about the pull tab collection box for Ronald McDonald House, I incor rectly referred to the store using the wrong name. It is again called the Haines Sellrite, not the Haines Mercantile. I apologize for the error. Christmas Celebrations Abound Mike and Sandy Moore had both their kids, Emily and Dillon, home for Christmas. Emily lives in Spokane and works as an Oc cupational Therapist Assistant and Dillon now lives in Bend and skis a lot, says Sandy. On Christ mas Eve they had 13 people for White Bean Chicken Chili and combread. Sandy is an amazing cook, so I know it was delicious. Ken and Carly Kritchen of Auburn, Sandy's sister, Sue and husband Zane from Bend, along with with Mike's brother, Doug and his wife, Mike's 93 year old mom Lillian, and Marion Price joined them for dinner. They had a lot of fun sledding and Emily enjoyed a long walk with her grandma. On Christmas Day, they went to La Grande where Lillian Moore hosted the turkey dinner. Deryl and Carolyn Leggett en joyed having all three of their kids and six grandchildren spend Christmas with them. Their daughter, Angela and her husband Dan live next door to them and have two children. Anthony who lives in Stanfield with his family has four children and Drew is preparing to leave for Grad School at University of Idaho in Moscow. He will be working to ward his Masters Degree in Plant Science. Carolyn said the kids had fun sledding, playing games and enjoying their toys. It's reported that Debby and Mike Schoeningh enjoyed Christ mas dinner at the Haines Steak House with friends. Debby said she cooked up a storm for Thanksgiving and was excited to take that apron off and enjoy Christmas out. Terri and Dennis Axness spent a quiet Christmas at home. Alone. And they liked it just fine...... (said Dennis). Barbara Wendt hosts a fun un-Christmas" event before Christmas for her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids each year. The family gathers, brings chips and goodies and plays games. This year six of her grandchildren and three great-grandchildren were able to attend according to daughter, Penny. Lisa Whited and her family traveled to Wallowa County to spend Christmas with her sister and others. She said the roads were okay except for the Minam grade. Connie says they're on the mend, which is good. Della Steele had both her daughters, Samantha and Hayden and all the kids for Christmas; Samantha lives in Ashland so isn't always able to be here for the holidays. Viola Perkins came out to Haines for Christmas Eve and ate prime rib dinner with her son, Lynn, and family. She is still recovering from a fall in Septem ber and her back was hurting a little too much to attend the Haines Baptist Christmas Candle light Service. Her middle son, Bill who lives in Tennessee with his wife, Cherie called to wish her a Merry Christmas. He had sent a big box of hand made goat milk soap earlier in the week. They raise meat goats and sell quite a lot of soap, as well. Viola's oldest granddaughter, Kelli, who is in nursing school at Washington State University, her husband Chris and sons, Blake and Vlad, surprised Viola with a visit on Sunday. Roger and Linda Smith were still celebrating Christmas on Monday as they enjoyed an after Christmas visit from their son Wesley and his family from Portland. They spent Christmas in Baker City with Roger's family and a niece, Candace Merrick. Linda reminisced about when she used to make cinnamon rolls up at Anthony Lakes. She said it had been years since she had made any and on Monday decided she wanted to make a batch for her family to enjoy. Helen, Marge Ann, and Kate Loennig who moved to Baker City from Haines last year enjoyed a quiet Christmas at home. Helen said she made dinner and they let Kate play with her toys from Santa. Marge Ann is continuing to recover from a broken leg. Jan and Kevin Dyke hosted about 23 people at their home on Christmas Eve Day. They opened presents and enjoyed dinner. Among the guests were her brother Jim and his daughter, Karen and her husband as well as their Aunt Emily. Jan said every one had a nice time. She also shared that about 40 people went caroling with the Baptist Church earlier in the month. A pick up pulling a wagon with straw on it hauled the carolers throughout town. Haines mayor Jim Brown said they stopped by his home and sang. They seemed to enjoy all of his festive Christmas decor. Following caroling the singers enjoyed chili, hot cider and cocoa. The day after Christmas my son, Arden and I went up to Anthony Lakes. He is currently a researcher at University of Oregon in Eugene having earned his PhD from Oregon State this spring. He is seeking to find a way to keep cancer cells from metastacizing. Arden skied and I took photos. During the day I saw quite a few Haines/North Powder area people enjoying the gorgeous day including Jarrod Maxwell, Brent and Mary Kerns, Jack and Meredith Wilson and their family, Rhea Patton and her daughter Kristie, just to name a few. It was fun seeing all of the families out and about with many of them sporting new goodies from Santa. Gene Rose, still considered a "Haines-ite," traveled to Portland with his daughter and son-in-law to spend Christmas with family. They made it to and from safely and enjoyed Christmas dinner with 26 family members, the youngest of whom was 3 months. Gene recently celebrated a birthday, too. I shan't reveal the number... .but it is more than 21. Duane Boyer's surgery apparently went well and he Will once again be performing New Year's Eve at the Haines Steak House with his daughter, Holly ■ and stepson, Jason. We went last year and thoroughly enjoyed their music (and the great food and atmosphere!) Happy New Year We wish everyone a Happy 2016! This will begin the Record- Courier's 115th year....we will be holding a celebration later on...and you're invited! Watch for upcoming columns.
