Streifel slaves over the grill for the Appreciation BBQ It's that time again! Labor Day weekend is here and so is the Halfway Fair and Rodeo. There will be an antique merry-go-round, antique cars, mule races, a dance, parade, rodeo, junior livestock show and auction, and musical entertainment. ICA Rodeo action starts on Saturday at 7 p.m. and continues on both Sunday, again at 7 p.m., and Monday at 2 p.m.(Pre Rodeo at 1:30 pm). The Ranch Style Brone Riding is a favorite event here, asrwell as The Mule Races that will take place during the rodeo performances. The parade will be at noon on Monday and will honor the grand marshals, Lynda Bird and Cheryl Thomas. The júnior livestock auction will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday and your support of these great 4-H and FFA kids is appreciated. Throughout the weekend, showmanship and confirmation classes will be held in the pavilion. On Sunday, Sept. 6 is the Round Robin Champion Shqwmanship con test. Dances will be held Saturday and Sunday evenings at 9 p.m. at the Pine Valley Grange Hall. Fans will need to purchase a $4 Baker County Fair and Panhandle Rodeo wristband to enter the grounds which will be good for the entire week end. tickets are $8 for the evening rodeo perform- performance on Monday. The Eagle Valley Grange will also be holding their annual Steak Feed on Saturday, Sept. 5 from 4-8 p.m. at the community park entering Richland (from Baker City). Tickets are $18 per person and includes steak and all the trimmings. A $5 hot dog meal is available for children. Msmonu Br*uiso Geiser-Pollman Park was filled with classic vehicles and enthusi asts on Saturday. They finished out the day at the golf course as part of the annual Durkee Steak Feed. "Haggen donated all of the product and we got J.R. Streifel to grill for us," said RUberti. "When the firefighters ar rived, we gave them a free hamburger and then also fed other customers. We asked the public to make a dona tion which in turn we gave to the Red Cross to assist with relief efforts," Ruberti added. Photo by Gina Perkins Steve Meyer, of ODF, enjoys a hamburger Buerkel-Zoellner Foundation Community Grant Applications Due Oct. 1 North Powder and Baker County Non-Profits Encouraged to Apply The late Donald Buerkel, a renowned potter who owned a ranch in the North Powder area, established a foundation on his belief that education, with an emphasis on liberal arte including religion, history, writing and other creative studies, was very important. It was his desire to support and further éducation and community enhancement through scholarships and community grants to eligi ble 501(c)(3) organizations. Any 501(c)(3) non-profit organization within North Powder dr Baker County is eligible to apply for the com munity grants and applications are due Oct. 1,2015. Student schol arships are available to North Powder graduates. Buerkel was born and raised in Michigan. He was a teacher in California for a number of years before moving to Oregon. While operating his ranch he established environmental safeguards for the feeding and habitat of birds and game by planting trees, estab lishing riparian covers and other improvements. He gave support to many groups including Crossroads Art Center in Baker City. Buerkel died in 2014 at the age of 72. Grant applications are available at the Buerkel-Zollner Founda tion, Baker Towers, Fourth Floor, 1705 Main Street, Suite 400 in Baker City. All applications for community grants must be submitted to the Buerkel-Zôllner Foundation, P.O. Box 1026 in Baker City, 97814 no later than Oct. 1. Grants will be determined Dec. 31.
