Cohort 4 of the Ford Foundation Leadership Program hosted a community celebration and unveiling of the Salt Lick Bronze which was the brain child of Whit Deschner. Able to see art in even the most common of items one might find in Eastern Oregon, a salt block licked into different forms by cat tle, Deschner created an annual event which has generated $60,000 over the years for re search on Parkinson's Disease at Oregon Health Science Uni versity. Deschner himself has Parkinson's. The Cohort not only raised enough money and in kind do nations for the bronze to be cast and placed on the Court Street Plaza, but had enough money left to put on a very nice compli mentary dinner complete with gourmet pizza, fresh water Photo by Gina Pekins melon, beverages and dessert Tanya Denne standing next to Salt Lick Bronze for community members from local restaurants. The event in cluded musical entertainment, as well. The project cost $30,000 according to Jeff Nelson, one of the Cohort members. And that's not all. The Cohort donated $500 to Tanya Denne, a BHS graduate who received her bachelor's degree from Uni versity of Portland and is re searching the plant Mucuna pruriens, "the seeds of which are a natural source of levodopa, the percursor compound to the neu rotransmitter dopamine. L-zdopa has been proven successful in the treatment of Parkinson's dis ease," according to information shared by Denne. Denne says she plans to study at JSS in Ooty, India from Sept.- Nov. 2015 and her project pro posal is $30,000. The Baker City Lions Club is accepting dona tions toward the cost of her field research and travel. Guyer to attend a spe cial event in his honor. The unveiling and dedication of Marine Capt. Donald R. Guyer’s WWII and Korean Memorabilia will take place July 11, 2015 in Nampa, Idaho at the Warhawk Air Museum at 2 p.m., Pa cific Standard Time. See GUYER on page 2 Friday Stampede Net Proceeds Help Shriners Colleen Taylor of the Haines Stampede Association says the Friday tradition will continue with the net proceeds from the July 3 rodeo being donated to the Baker County Shrine Club to assist with the purchase of the Shrine Steer. Those funds in turn are donated to the Shriners Hospital for Chil dren in Portland. "We've been able to donate $12,000 so far over the years," said Taylor. The rodeo Friday, July 3, begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday's start time is 1:30 p.m. Sierra Bingham is doing great and continuing to improve daily according to all reports from her family!
