The Spirit of Agriculture
Every year begins with the hope of good
weather and better prices.
Some years Mother Nature co-operates and
some years she doesn ’t.
That’s agriculture. But every year begins with
the faith and hope that this year will be the year.
June 21, 1805. “There is also a species of Lark, much resembling the
Old Field Lark, with a yellow breast and a black spot on the croup. The
beak is somewhat larger and more curved, and the notes differ consid
erably.”
Personally, I am always very eager to first hear that seven to 10 note
call. Without fail, it reminds me that Old Man Winter may be as tired
of us as we are him. Much like bulbs poking their heads out in the
spring, margaritas on the deck in the summer, a harvest moon in the fall,
and crock-pot meals in the winter, I have come to depend on the Western
Meàdowlark’s beloved call for encouragement, fun, contemplation and
comfort.
It would be a shame if we let our state bird ever decline to a level
where we here in on the east side of the state are left to remark how we
mi ss hearing the once familiar call of the Western Meadowlark.
That’s the spirit of agriculture. We believe in it.
