Life in the
Valley of
Riches
by Dan Mancuso,
publisher
As many of you know I am involved with
the ancient and honorable order of E Clampus
Vitus AKA the Clampers. The southwestern
Oregon chapter is Umpqua Joe 1859. As a
historical society, our primary focus is to
maintain western history.
We do this by building monuments with
funds that we mainly raise amongst the club
members.
Lately, we have been very busy building
monuments and holding gatherings with
members of our order.
You may have noticed the monument at the
corner of 199 and Hwy 46 in downtown Cave
Junction.
Our third monument was completed
last weekend with funds from the Four Way
Foundation and was dedicated this morning
at the intersection of 6th and G St. in Grants
Pass. Along with the monument we dedicated
in Galice, June 12, this makes our third for the
year and we still have four more planned to be
built in Fort Rock, Brookings, Gold Beach and
Rogue River.
In addition to our monuments, we do some
philanthropic work by raising funds from events
such as the upcoming oyster stand during the
Lions Club Labor Day Festival. Most of our
good deeds are done quietly behind the scenes
without any fanfare. But our Labor Day event
helps pay for the scholarships that we give to
area students. While most of the better students
have plenty of grant opportunities, we focus
on the ones left behind. To qualify for our
scholarship, you must be going to a trade school
and have a less than stellar grade point average.
What I am trying to point out is that our
club is very busy this year. We are busy because
we have been sheltered in place for a year and
a half and we need to make up for lost time.
Many or our members have put in more hours
than I can count, taking them away from their
paying jobs and more importantly their family.
But we have many more members that aren’t
very active.
This is not just a Clamper issue; all service
clubs are down in active membership. With the
upcoming Labor Day Festival, the Lions Club
will need a lot of hands to help pull off this
event.
If you have a few hours and would like to
give the Lions Club a hand Sept. 4-6, please
reach out to any Lions Club member and offer a
hand. If you don’t know one, give us a call and
we will point you in the right direction. Let’s all
pitch in and give the Lions a hand and make this
year’s Labor Day the best ever!
Thank you for picking up this week’s paper,
enjoy! ~ djm

Illinois Valley Lions Club Labor
Day Festival 2021 Sep 4, 5 and 6
The Illinois Valley Lions Club is
inviting you and/or your group, business,
organization, club, church, school, etc, to
participate in the 48th annual Labor Day
Festival beginning Saturday, Sep. 4, 2021
through Monday, Sep. 6, 2021 in Cave
Junction.
This year’s festival and parade theme:
“ILLINOIS VALLEY TOGETHER
AGAIN”
The Illinois Valley Lions Club is
proud of its works in conjunction with
Lions Club International in promoting
good eyesight and hearing for members
of our community, providing eye and ear
exams, helping with glasses and hearing
aids, etc.
We are once again expecting a
great turnout and we hope weather will
cooperate. Along with our parade, we will
be having festival activities at Jubilee
Park throughout the weekend preceding
the Monday parade and immediately
following the parade. Events include a
Mason’s Pancake Breakfast daily and a
Tuff Truck competition held Saturday
and Sunday. In years past, the Tuff
Trucks drew in over 2,200 spectators that
also visited the booths. Booth space is
available now with pre-registration.
The Illinois Valley Lions Club has
been an active support force in this
community for 73 years (since 1948), and
we are encouraging everyone to come
out and show how you celebrate “Illinois
Valley Together Again” to participate as
vendors, demonstrators and performance
acts.
Booth applications will be in the
weekly edition of the Illinois Valley News
or you can call David Anderson at 541-
597-4486 to pre-register. If required by
state mandate, masks may be required at
the festival.

and must be removed by Tuesday at noon.
ALL BOOTHS MUST CHECK
IN AT THE REGISTRATION DESK
