Wednesday, December 19, 2018 Josephine County Crime Briefs: by Sam Marsh, KLDR 104.5 FM / KAJO 1270 AM / 99.7 FM A California woman was jailed Dec. 11 after she led deputies on a high-speed pursuit and then wrecked her vehicle in the Illinois Valley near Selma. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office reports 34-year-old Tawnee Lee Cook of Crescent City was arrested following the pursuit that ended Tuesday at 11:55 a.m. when she crashed into a ditch in the 4000-block of Reeves Creek Road. Deputies said Cook was speeding in a blue sedan when they attempted to stop her, but she failed to yield so they began to pursue her. She was not injured in the crash, but she was placed into custody. Cook was transported to Grants Pass and lodged in the Josephine County Jail on charges including felony attempt to elude police, reckless driving and probation violation. She was also cited for speeding, driving while suspended and no insurance. ~~~~~~~~~~ A Williams man was arrested yesterday for committing domestic violence against his wife in the Illinois Valley. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies responded to the reported incident near the intersection of Redwood Highway and Eight Dollar Road Tuesday at about 1:45 p.m.. Deputies said the wife of 38-year-old Nathaniel Ray Labat had hitched a ride to that location after being assaulted by her husband at a residence on Deer Creek Road. She advised that Labat choked her, threatened her and broke her cell phone. After catching up with Labat at the Eight Dollar Botanical Area, deputies placed him into custody. He was transported to Grants Pass and lodged in the Josephine County Jail on charges of domestic strangulation and coercion. According to the sheriff’s log, his wife was frightened but not seriously injured. A flock of turkeys crossing Redwood Highway in the Jerome Prairie area caused a four-vehicle crash yesterday that sent at least one person to the hospital. The Oregon State Police reports troopers and emergency personnel responded to the multi- vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 199 near the west end of Redwood Avenue Wednesday at about 2 p.m.. Troopers said the crash occurred when several vehicles swerved to stopped for a flock of turkeys on the roadway. They said the collision involved both north- and southbound lanes of the highway, and it shut down all four travel lanes for approximately 45 minutes until the crashed vehicles could be removed. It was unclear which of the drivers was hurt, but OSP reported that one was transported by AMR Ambulance to Three Rivers Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. All four vehicles had to be towed from the scene. ~~~~~~~~~~ A Grants Pass man with a history of impaired driving was arrested for the same offense early yesterday near the downtown area. Public safety officers pulled over a Dodge pickup driven by 41-year-old Jason Lee Tipton near the corner of NW 3rd and D streets on Thursday at about 1:50 a.m.. Upon contact, officers said they discovered Tipton was driving with a felony suspended license. He also admitted to drinking alcohol prior to driving. Tipton was booked into the Josephine County Jail for driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and felony driving while suspended. He was also cited for Failing to obey a traffic control device, no insurance and failing to install an ignition interlock device on his pickup, which was impounded. ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ A Cave Junction man was jailed for violating his post-prison supervision and may also face a drug charge following his arrest in the North Valley area late last night. The Oregon State Police reports 47-year-old Charles David Fletcher was arrested in the 1000-block of Grants Pass Road Wednesday at about 11:30 p.m.. Troopers said Fletcher was one of two people caught trespassing on properties in that area. Upon contact, they determined he was on parole connected to a previous conviction for first degree burglary. In addition, a consent search found him to be in possession of methamphetamine and related drug paraphernalia. Fletcher was transported to Grants Pass and lodged in the Josephine County Jail on a no-bail parole detainer. A charge of possession of a controlled substance against him was referred to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration. ~~~~~~~~~~ The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office has announced the apprehension of three more local fugitives who have recently skipped scheduled court dates. In a press release titled “Warrant Wednesday,” the sheriff’s office reported the arrests of Jack Steinhoff, Derek Hood and Justin Taylor. Steinhoff was arrested Dec. 7 on Deer Creek Road in Selma. He was wanted for failing to appear in court for unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, attempt to commit fourth-degree assault and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Hood was arrested Dec. 10 on Redwood Highway for a parole biolation. Taylor was arrested the same day on North Redwood Highway for failing to appear in court for unlawful possession of methamphetamine.
