He added that the 100 acres or so
that are closest to Rockydale Road are
actually not the most crucial for the
endangered species. But there, the BLM
has done brush cleanup, in partnership
with the Oregon Department of Forestry,
in order to make nearby residents at less
risk for wildfire. That cleanup will also
serve as an entry point to less accessible
parts of French Flat, where the agency
will now be able to do prescribed,
understory burning to benefit the
species.
In all, the agency expects to treat,
through brush collection or burning,
about 400 acres, although the prescribed
burning will probably not begin until
2020.

Cut.
According to local historian Greg
Walter, in 1902 the Logan, Simmons
and Cameron Gold Mine had diverted
water from the East Fork of the Illinois
River for ahydraulic mining operation.
Their process included hydraulically
lifting and moving excess water into a
pit. But when the water in the pit began
to back up, they needed to get rid of it.
The solution? A deep drainage
ditch, several miles in length, which
we now know as Logan Cut, designed
to divert the excess water into the West
Fork of the Illinois River.
Logan Cut, which still fills up with
water in the rainy season, is a significant
geographical feature that runs through
French Flat. It is listed on the National
Register of Historical Places, and is
part of a larger nomination, Mining
Resources of the Upper Illinois Valley.

French Flat is out of bounds for
off-road vehicles, and to that end, the
BLM is putting up fencing to prevent
that type of access.
Wender emphasized that the four
ACES projects, as well as some other
projects in the Illinois Valley, have been
an “amazing” collaboration of a number
of agencies and entities: U.S. Forest
Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
Oregon Department of Forestry, Oregon
Department of Agriculture, Nature
Conservancy, Illinois Valley Soil and
Water District, KS Wild, Illinois Valley
Schools and contractors who are helping
with clearing and fencing.
“The Illinois Valley really is a
botanical wonderland,” said Wender,
“and to think we have all of these
organizations coming together,
recognizing that this is part of our
natural heritage.”
