On May 28, like every Memorial Day since I have lived
here, I attended the American Legion’s flag ceremony at City
Hall. Generally, it’s the same people every year, both in the
crowd and performing in the ceremony, but this year was
different. Two men were missing, both for different reasons:
Bill McMorrine moved to Eugene and Carl Jacobson Jr. died.
While it was nice to see Betty there, Carl’s absence was clearly
noticed.
Kudos to the American Legion Glenn Morrison Post #70
for showing up rain or shine each year for the flag ceremony.
I also would like to thank Councilor Dan Bosch, the only
member of the city’s current board for being in attendance. I’m
sure they had good reasons, but I’m a little surprised that none
of the others cared to show in honor of Carl.
Now, let’s get down to business. When I was president
of the chamber of commerce, we raised $6,300 to recreate the
“Experience the Illinois Valley” signs. As of the 2017 budget,
the chamber had $5,000 left. I was not happy they spent the
money; I feel it was a misappropriation of funds, but I gave
them some time to see if they would follow through.
Now, here we are looking at the beginning of June
2018 and the chamber only has about $4,000 in the coffer.
At their current spending levels, I find it difficult to see the
chamber in business come August and that doesn’t even take in

consideration the expenses of the popular Concerts in the Park.
Since the signs are a huge sales pitch for people traveling
through our town, I feel they are very important to the
economic viability of our tourism trade.
I asked many of you for money in the past to rebuild the
signs and you donated funds. Given the fact that the chamber
leadership has mismanaged its money, I am asking you again.
The artist is lined up and ready to go, so let’s make this
happen. On May 30, I am going to open an account at Umpqua
Bank for deposits to be made by those who understand the
importance of this project. The money will not be used for
anything other than the signs. When our goal is met, the funds
will be distributed to the artist when the job is complete.
Some of you may wonder why I am doing this. The reason
is because I, and other members on the chamber board at the
time, told you we were going to get the new signs and I feel it’s
my responsibility to follow through. I gave you my word and I
intend to keep it.

sell it to local businesses?
WHY do you think the local

that means it’s time for The 6th Annual Otis
Memorial Bike Ride! Sunday, June 10, 10
a.m. and FREE!
*The Otis Ride is a *free* and fun
group bicycle ride, organized by I.V.
Bikespace, from Takilma to Cave Junction
and back-- or just ride it half-way, one
direction or the other! We start, as always,
at 10 a.m. in the lower parking lot below the
Takilma Community Building (TCB), and
finish around 1p.m. in the upper parking lot
at the TCB.
*We’ll have one rest stop at the half-
way point (for those doing the whole ride),
at Coffee Heaven in CJ, around 11 a.m., then
we’ll head back to Takilma where we’ll have
drinks n’ snacks potluck under the big trees,
in the shade!
*This is *not* a race, and the ride route
will not be closed to car traffic-- we’ll stick
together for fun and safety.
