Missing man found
dead in trees
Man found

On Dec. 20, around 4
a.m., the Oregon State Police
(OSP) arrived at the scene of
a reported dead body in the
100 block of E. River Street in
rural Cave Junction.
Troopers arrived on
scene and located a deceased
male outside the residence
who appeared to have been
shot in the back of the head.
The Josephine County Major
Crime Response Team was
activated to conduct the death

A man last seen by friends around 4 p.m. Dec. 18,
was located Dec. 20, 2017, at approximately 12:15 p.m.,
by Oregon State Police (OSP) Troopers from the Grants
Pass Area Command when they responded to a call about
a vehicle that had left Highway 199 (Redwood Highway)
near milepost 24.
The preliminary investigation has determined that
46 year old Benjamin Saxby, of Venice, Florida, was
operating a 2003 Kia Sedona southbound on Highway
199, when for an unknown reason veered off the highway
and down a steep embankment. The minivan came to
rest approximately 100 feet west of the roadway. Saxby
was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the
vehicle. Saxby suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced
dead on the scene by Fire Chief Dennis Hoke. There were
no other occupants in the vehicle.
The OSP was assisted by Illinois Valley Fire and the
Oregon Department of Transportation.

*Destructive devils vandalized
the front doors and broke windows
in a church at 498 Laurel Road on
Nov. 27.

filed for fourth-degree assault and
strangulation.
*A resident in the 100 block
of Hogue Drive reported a burglary
in September. On Dec. 18, an
individual found the stolen goods
near the 100 block of Warren Road,
next to a pile of old clothing. He
returned the items to the person on
Hogue Drive. One suitcase contained
unopened mail, medical items, and
paperwork that may belong to the
suspected thief.

*At 10:06 a.m. a gal in the
600 block of Lakeshore Drive
was trying to get her boyfriend
ready for his court hearing, and he
*Lazy thieves stole the license
plates from a vehicle parked in
the 100 block of Hussey Avenue
overnight on Dec. 15.
*On Dec. 13, Good Samaritans
felt sorry for a woman during the
bad weather, so they offered to let
her stay in their apartment in the 200
block of Millie Street. She said she
would pay them $200, but the couple
refused the money, because they
were helping her out of kindness.
However, when they asked her to
leave on Dec. 16, she threatened
them with violence and refused to
go away. The couple requested that
a deputy from Josephine County
Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) escort her
off their property. It was unclear if
the ungrateful guest had vacated the
premises as of Dec. 20.
*A driver struck a pothole and
popped two tires near Holland Loop
and Hays Cutoff on Dec. 17. The
tow truck was not available until

* A deputy played mediator
during a property exchange in the
600 block of Lakeshore Drive at
12:20 p.m. (Most people exchange
gifts this time of year.)
*A landlord was having issues
at 2009 Laurel Road at 2:17 p.m.
(Whatever happened to ‘tis the
season to be jolly?)
*Folks in the 200 block of
Thompson Creek Road weren’t
getting along so well at 3:15 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 22
*Mail that was stolen on Dec.
18, was found scattered for a stretch
of two miles near the 10000 block of
Caves Hwy. (Air mail?)
*Alert citizens noticed an open
gate, and part of a fence was missing
near Kinnikinnick Drive at 1:47
p.m. A deputy contacted the former
resident of the property, and learned
that he was removing a fence that he
had built.
Saturday, Dec. 23
*Contractor equipment may
have been stolen from the lower
parking lot at the Oregon Caves
National Monument.
*A jerk was harassing homeless
people, and riding a bicycle in and
out of traffic in the 200 block of W.
Watkins Street at 4:54 p.m. The anti-
hero was wearing a blue blanket on
his head.
