Happy Camp News: by Judy Bushy
Fall is such a beautiful
time of the year. The rain
last weekend brought down
a lot of leaves, but other
trees are still adorned in
brilliant foliage! Someone
from Happy Camp recently
mentioned they were getting
tired of raking the pretty
colors! The large Walnut tree
in our front yard has dropped
most of the leaves which lets
the sunshine through.
We were given a
jar of quince jelly, pear-
butter, (green tomato)
picalilly relish and a loaf
of gingerbread. The cooler
weather sure has brought
out the baker in many of our
neighbors.
Seems like the
pumpkins were the last thing
to work on from the garden.
Well, there were piles of
pumpkins last Thursday at
the final Farmers’ Market for
the fall. The bounce house
was set up and the kids were
doing artwork. That is, when
they weren’t’ seeing what
the inside of an ambulance
looked like or fire truck or
WOW even the mercy flights
helicopter. Even as they
all got outside the fence as
it prepared to take off, the
children loved to see it!!
Now that we aren’t
working in the garden so
much, it’s time for crafting
and indoor projects. That
means that it is time for the
Fall Harvest Craft Faire next
Saturday in Seiad Valley.
You’ll be amazed at how
many really talented artists
and crafters live along the
Klamath River. I’m hoping
to get a handmade picture
frame from Annie Buma who
makes great ones. There will
be all sorts of craft items.
It’s wonderful opportunity to
get special homemade gifts
and stocking stuffers for the
coming gift giving season.
The Seiad Valley Fire Hall,
44601 Highway 96 east of
Happy Camp 18 miles will
be open from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m.
While you are there
enjoying the craft ideas to
buy or get ideas for your
own projects, you’ll no
doubt get hungry. And you
are in luck. There will be
homemade soups, chili,
breads, and beverages for
lunch from 11:30 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. The best part of
the event is that Seiad Valley
is very grateful for all the
support for the Seiad Valley
Volunteer Fire Department.
The last five years, the
Seiad Valley people have
had four warnings or actual
evacuations for wildfire.
This year they were dealing
with the California fire,
eastern part of the Eclipse
Fire started by lightening.
All of a sudden the public
information officer got a call
as fire could be seen coming
their way from Oregon in the
vicinity of Cook an’ Grants
Pass. Events like these
make the community really
appreciative of the volunteer
firefighters, as well as others
who come when a larger
event occurs.
Next Monday is the
Happy Camp Neighborhood
Watch Meeting. David
Culbert is the recently
elected leader of the
Neighborhood Watch. The
meeting will be Monday,
Nov. 6 at the Karuk Housing
Authority Conference
Room. Karuk Housing is at
635 Jacobs Way in Happy
Camp. They are always
eager to hear of the problems
and your suggestions and
solutions to offer.
The Neighborhood
Watch meets the first
Monday of each month,
unless there needs to
be a change which will
be shown on https://

Lisa Bousfield has also
included helpful information
on burn days and other
matters there. Burn permits
are needed to burn and you
have to call the burn hotline
to confirm it is a permissive
burn day by calling 530-
842-8123 or toll-free within
Siskiyou County 866-652-
2876. They also advertised
the Take Back Drug Day
last Saturday in addition
to Maggie Shepard and
Madeline being at the last
Farmers’ Market to tell
what they would take back
unused, expired or unwanted
medications. Several people
said that they missed it, so
I’ll let you know alternatives
as soon as I hear back from
Maggie.
The Happy Camp
Chamber will be meeting
soon as well. There is good
news about a large donation
designated to include the
youth of the community next
year. I will let you know that
date and further exciting
information.

Well, it’s only been eight hours in the
old RV and I’m trying to figure out if I can
sue Sirius XM for the money for my divorce.
Like the guy in the movie Network, “I’m mad
as hell and I can’t take it anymore!” There’s a
lot to be said for having your favorite music
at your fingertips, but I’m driving with a news
junkie. Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, BBC, CNN,
if they are yakking about the sad state of the
world or politics, he’s listening to it. It’s funny,
but lots of men will tell you that they wouldn’t
give two cents for a woman’s cockeyed
opinion, but put her in a size 2 dress, give her
a microphone and sit her behind a news desk,
and they will listen all day long! My problem
is I suffer from depression. These news
reporters never have anything good to say.
Sure, every now and then there’s a 12 second
story about a child being surprised by a parent
returning from deployment, or a beloved pet
being found but that’s it for anything uplifting.
Because of this I have given up all news. I
don’t watch it, read it or listen to it. Sorry
Dan, but if anything good happens in town
some positive minded person will tell me.
So between a news boycott and my meds I
run on a pretty even keel. My depression is
a chemical imbalance in my brain. If I was
diabetic I would take my insulin, I’m short on
serotonin so I take my med. Bad news does
nothing to improve my outlook on life, and
I do not have a naturally sunny outlook as it
is. I can hear my friends laughing at this. Cut
it out! If I can’t fix the problem I don’t want
to hear the gory details. President Trump
won’t take my advice, ISIS won’t lay down
their guns and stay home, and I can’t even
begin to know how to divide up Jerusalem so
anyone would be happy. Most of the women
in the world want to raise their children in
peace, with full tummies and warm beds. I
wish I could fix that for them but I can’t. I try
to concentrate on my own little world. The
food bank feeds people for free, they could
use volunteers. The Pregnancy Center is there
to offer the option that abortion isn’t the only
choice for life’s biggest surprise. We have
churches that offer hot meals and the Senior
Center that does so many good things I can’t
even list them. Local artists are sharing their
gifts in our schools. Cave Junction has a place
for every minute you can spare. The wealth of
good here is huge. There is music in the park,
free harvest festivals, Rotary and Lions clubs.
The Pledge of Allegiance is still said in our
schools. Your kids can learn about God, with
parental consent, through our Bible release
program and high school students can still
pray around the flag on campus if they choose.
We have churches of every denomination. We
have AA and NA meetings all week here in
town. Need a safe place for your kids to be
until you are off work? Boys and Girls club is
right here in town. There are countless coaches
for every sport your kid could be interested
in, and after school homework help for kids
struggling academically. I’m sure I missed
somebody, but God Bless you for your service
to our community. It’s easy to see all the bad
stuff here, you hear so much about it. If you
open your eyes and shut your ears you will
see how truly blessed we are. There’s great
people, clear rivers, sweet smelling air (except
in October, it’s a little skunky), and the most
beautiful scenery anywhere in the USA. So
if all this bad news we’re being bombarded
with is making you feel sad or anxious go
do something nice for someone, volunteer
anywhere. You’ll feel better right away.
Oh yeah, dismantle the radio if you
are traveling with a news junkie.
