Happy Birthday Stella!
Happy Camp residents are ready to
celebrate the 151st birthday of Stella Walthall
Patterson the author of “Dear Mad’m” at the
Siskiyou Museum in Yreka Oct. 14, at 1 p.m.
“Dear Mad’m” has been kept in print
since 1982 by Barbara Brown, publisher of
“Naturegraph” books in Happy Camp. “Dear
Mad’m,” the first known book dealing with
modern life on the Klamath River on its most
isolated stretches. It is most likely the easiest
book to read about the Klamath. Patterson of
Clear Creek died in Redding Dec. 23, 1955 at
89 with what must have been a fine feeling of
accomplishment. Patterson also wrote stories
for national women’s magazines from 1890 to
1934.
Bigfoot a big success!
Happy Camp’s biggest celebration of the
year is the Bigfoot Jamboree. In September,
we celebrated the 51st annual event.
All the fun began Friday night before
Labor Day - the Bigfoot Queen, Kara Brink,
was crowned and danced with her dad as an
escort. Jessica Lantow was crowned the 2017
Junior Queen of the Bigfoot Jamboree and
also won a second place prize for the parade.
The Junior Princesses were Emily Mattson
and Abigail Rhodes, and the Bigfoot Princess
was Nikki Harrison. These gals worked very
hard selling raffle tickets for the support of
the Bigfoot Jamboree. And there were many
generous donations from the community
and businesses to make many great prizes
available for the raffle.
Then, the rest of the evening was full of
music at the River Park. There was a karaoke
competition and dancing under the stars
over the pavilion and vendors made many
goodies for the hungry and other offerings.
The children especially enjoyed the spraying
“string,” swords lit in the evening darkness,
and toys to delight one and all.
Saturday the fun resumed with
additional food booths and activities.
Included was a free tot fun area and an
obstacle course activity for children. Plus, the
big bounce house gave older children lots of
exercise along with an inflatable slide into the
water that kept them active and cool.
There had been 20 lightning fires in the
Klamath National Forest, and a firefighter
city was set up at the east end of River Park
in Happy Camp. Some of the Fire Design
T-Shirt vendors also set up at the Bigfoot
Jamboree.
At the Happy Camp Chamber booth,
Dan Sheets, handyman, artist and carver
drew an appreciative audience to watch him
carve three bears enjoying a honey comb. He
also had walking sticks with a rattlesnake or
medicine man on them.
Sunday, before everyone went to the
River Park again, there was the parade.
Traditionally, it starts at the Market-Post
Office area on Davis Road. This year the
Kingfisher Market parking lot was full of
a variety of vehicles, Smokey Bear, and of
course a caged Bigfoot, ready to begin the
parade at 11 a.m.
George and Casey Chambers were the
Grand Marshals for this year’s parade. For
many years, George Chambers was the Pizza
House owner. He brought Casey to Happy
Camp as a newlywed and teacher and recently
she retired as principal and supervisor of
Happy Camp Elementary School.
The best nonprofit float was “The
Dancing Toes.” The children on the float
have been taking dancing lessons, some for
three and four years. They presented a recital
at the River Park Pavilion Saturday and they
were in the parade on Sunday. They were
delightful! Second place float was a group
of traditional Karuk dancers of all ages in
memorial to Vera.
Also in the parade there were a variety
of firefighting vehicles and ambulances.
Bigfoot kept getting out of his cage, but he
wasn’t scary and got hugs from some of the
crowd and snapshots by others.
Returning to the Happy Camp River
Park Pavilion, there were raffle drawings and
the Bigfoot Queen, Kara and Junior Queen
drew the tickets with chainsaws and big
checks being some of the big prizes. Many
more tickets were drawn for gift certificates
for gas and groceries to trips and outings for
families to enjoy.
Then, of course there was the Ducky
Derby, Jerry from Incident Command won
the prize for the fastest duck to the finish-
line. He generously donated the prize back to
the Bigfoot Jamboree for next year, planned
for Aug. 31 to Sept. 2. Residents were
encouraged to put on their “thinking hats”
and plan a float or fun booth or activity for
next year.
