Tales from the Rural Patrol

Sunday, May 7
*On May 6, a guy went
camping at Spaulding Pond with
his neighbor’s daughter and her
boyfriend. He notified his wife at
3 p.m. that his 2004 Suzuki Verona
had broken down. When she still
had not heard from him at 9:07 a.m.
May 7, Josephine County Search
and Rescue personnel checked Eight
Dollar Mountain area based on a
cell-phone ping. Campers stated
they provided water to the driver of
a small Suzuki that had overheated,
and he told them he would coast
down the hill. The stranded travelers
phoned at 11:54 a.m. and said they
were near a Smokey the Bear sign,
headed toward Onion Mountain
Lookout. They were found near the
Briggs Valley and Four Corners area,
and their family brought them home.
*SOS reported an activated
motion alarm on a front exit in the
400 block of Caves Hwy. at 9:42
a.m.
*The driver of a black Honda
Civic was warned for failure to
signal and speeding at 11:32 a.m.
near Redwood Hwy. and Golf Club
Drive.
*JCSO assisted another agency
with information at Taylor’s Sausage
Country Store at 12:17 p.m.
*A motorist was cited for
failure to carry proof of insurance,
and warned for failure to obey
a traffic control device at the
intersection of Caves Avenue and
Caves Hwy. at 12:30 p.m.
*A kitchen motion detector
sounded off at 12:33 p.m. in the
6100 block of Takilma Road.
*A deputy patrolled the parking
lot northwest of Western Plaza at
12:52 p.m.
*Someone was shooting on the
O’Brien side of the creek at MP 34
on Hwy. 199 at 12:54 p.m.
*Law enforcement checked
on a suspicious guy with a model
158 shot gun at 1:06 p.m. in the 300
block of Caves Hwy.
*Everything appeared to be OK
at 1:37 p.m. behind a gate at MP 5
on Westside Road.
*The 6300 block of Deer Creek
Road passed inspection at 2:19 p.m.
*The operator of a silver-
colored Accura coupe was warned
for speeding in the 200 block of
Shadowbrook Drive at 2:42 p.m.
*A gal in the 4900 block of
Lakeshore Drive bought a tan 2006
Subaru Forester with no license
plates from someone at a gas station
in Grants Pass, but she thought
the California DMV title looked
suspicious. She was advised that the
vehicle was not returning as stolen,
but if it had happened recently, it
may not have been entered yet. She
noted that the Forester had been
listed on Craigslist for quite a while.
*A deputy investigated five
people who were in a white Nissan
in a parking lot at 212 S. Hussey
Avenue at 3:34 p.m. One of them ran
westbound on Schumacher Street.
*At 3:47 p.m. a fellow was
warned for open container behind
the old Subway at 220 S. Redwood
Hwy.
*Nothing was happening at
4:17 p.m. at 126 S. Redwood Hwy.
*Law enforcement drove
through the 100 block of S. Hussey
Avenue at 4:25 p.m.
*A motorist in a blue Ford
pickup truck was warned for
driving while his license was
suspended (DWS) at 4:32 p.m. near
Schumacher Street and S. Kerby
Avenue.
*A deputy checked on a
character behind St. Matthias
Episcopal Church at 25904 Redwood
Hwy. at 4:46 p.m.
*Security footage captured
photos of two chicks and a guy who
appeared to be carrying an assault
rifle. The trio walked through a
vacant house in the 100 block of
Greenview Drive. A report was filed
for first-degree burglary.
*At 5:18 p.m. the operator of
a white Dodge pickup truck near
Takilma Road and Dick George
Road was warned for DWS. (Driving
while suspended, not dancing with
the stars)
*SOS reported a key pad panic
alarm at 6:01 p.m. from the 100
block of Warren Road.
Monday, May 8
*A 1988 Toyota 4-Runner was
stolen from the 300 block of Caves
Hwy. between 10 p.m. May 7 and
6:50 a.m. May 8. The tailgate and
front half of the truck are silver-
colored, and the back is black.
*Between 7:30-8:30 p.m.
May 5, there was a collision in the
4000 block of Dick George Road
involving a 2001 Dodge and a blue
Buick Century station wagon. The
driver of the Buick swerved to
mailboxes on the east side of the
road, then pulled into a driveway
on the west side. Damages totaled
$3,000 for the Dodge and $1,000 for
the station wagon.
*A gal in the 100 block of W.
Lister Street never received three
packages and various mail items
which should have been delivered
between March 30 and May 5. Her
new credit cards were stolen, and
used around Cave Junction. A video
from Shop Smart Food Warehouse
showed the thieves using her credit
card, and an employee at Circle K
can identify the crooks as well. The
credit card companies have been
notified regarding the fraudulent
charges.
*There was an alarm at 12:29
p.m. in the 200 block of Stevenson
Street.
*A concerned citizen reported
that a suspicious-looking fellow in a
white Honda Accord did not belong
in the area. The skinny guy appeared
to be casing homes in the 900 block
of Garner Road between 11 a.m. and
12:30 p.m., and it looked like he was
huffing an unknown substance.
*A specialized Rockhopper Pro
EV 29er mountain bike disappeared
from a garage in the 3900 block of
Rockydale Road between April 20
and May 2. The black and red bike
was equipped with clipless Shimano
pedals, a pump, Cygo Centauri light,
and two water bottle holders. A
report was filed for first-degree theft
and second-degree burglary.
*An alert gal in the 400 block
of Lindilu Lane was worried about
her 72-year-old neighbor because
he had been gone since the previous
morning between 10:30-11. She
believed he had OnStar in his blue
2016 Toyota pickup truck with a
camper shell. He hadn’t told her

*Sounds of breaking glass and
two people yelling could be heard
from a cabin behind an Illinois
Valley Fire District (IVFD) station in
the 600 block of Caves Hwy. at 9:01
a.m.
*At 9:07 a.m. Illinois Valley
Funeral Directors were notified of a
deceased person in the 35200 block
of Redwood Hwy.
*A deputy looked for a camp
near Waldo Road and Forest Service
Road 4803 towards Sanger Peak at
10:30 a.m.

of plans to take a trip, and he was
usually good about telling her when
he was leaving. He went to the
Illinois Valley Senior Center every
Monday to work out, but he wasn’t
there, and he wasn’t at the hospital
either. She even checked his hiking
spot on Eight Dollar Mountain,
but there was no sign of the 6-foot
fellow with short gray hair. She
must have been so relieved when
he returned home at 6:32 p.m., after
visiting with a friend from Colorado.

*At 4:40 p.m. a JCSO
dispatcher was notified that there
were children present when someone
pulled a gun in the 23900 block of
Redwood Hwy. The caller stated that
if JCSO didn’t get out there and deal
with it, they would be held liable,
then they hung up. When a deputy
responded, the people there were
uncooperative and did not want to
discuss the problem. This was the
third contact by law enforcement
within a week at this marijuana grow
site, but there was no evidence of
disturbance or danger to children.

PLUG the microwave oven
directly into the wall outlet —
never use an extension cord.
MAKE sure the microwave
oven is at a safe height, within
easy reach of all users.
OPEN food slowly, away from
the face. Hot steam or the food
itself can cause burns.
FOOD heats unevenly in micro-
wave ovens. Stir and test be-
fore eating or giving to children.
NEVER heat a baby bottle in
the microwave. Since a micro-
wave oven heats unevenly, it
can create hot pockets, leading
to burns. Warm a bottle in a
bowl of warm—not hot or boil-
ing—water, or by running it
under the tap.
MICROWAVE USE
Always supervise children when
they are using a microwave oven.
Use only microwave-safe food
containers or dishes. Never use
aluminum foil or metal in a micro-
wave oven.
If you have a fire in the micro-
wave, leave the door closed, turn
the oven off and unplug it from the
wall. If the fire does not go out, get
outside and call 9-1-1.

Scald burns are the leading cause of
injury from microwave ovens.
