What is HASL?
HASL is our local Center for Independent Living
and it covers Josephine and Jackson counties. It is
consumer-driven by demand and by a need and desire
for representation by and for people with disabilities.
Their sole governing mission is to maximize the
quality of life for people with disabilities by promoting
equal access and equal opportunity.
Core services include training individuals to help
them gain skills that will enable them to live more
independently. They work to help with understanding
your basic rights, to help facilitate access to services
and to explore various eligibility criteria.
HASL also works within the community to make
changes that promote full inclusion in all areas of
society. They were involved in the changes made to
Forks State Park for accessibility. If you are in need of

information regarding disability and/or non-disability
related services, HASL can assist. They partner with
other organizations and agencies, and can make
referrals if necessary.
HASL loans out wheelchairs, walkers, canes,
crutches, bath aids and more to those in need. The
Work Incentive Network assists in learning how
federal and state benefit programs may be affected
by earned income from employment. They also do
accessibility consultations, on-site evaluations and
ADA design ideas. Other services are also available.
They served almost 14,000 people in the 2015/2016
fiscal year. If you need help, you can reach HASL at

Obituaries
Jillian “Jilli” Chadd,
70, of Cave Junction died
suddenly of a heart attack April 6,
2017, at Asante Rogue Regional
Medical Center. She was the
widow of Lou Johnson who died
in an automobile accident in
September 2012.
Jilli showed great courage
in recent years working hard to
overcome her health issues.
Jilli was born in
Johannesburg, South Africa and
lived for some years in Northern
Ireland and London, England. She
came to the USA as an 18-year-old
for a couple of years and never
left.
Her family in Australia and
England will miss her terribly as
will her friends in Cave Junction.
Fred William Tokash
Sr, aka “Big Daddy”
NASCAR and baseball fan
and the man who single handedly
made Frito Lay the company it is
today by his constant and frequent
munching, fell asleep on April 13,
2017.
He will be remembered for
having a “unique” fashion sense
much to his wife and daughter’s
horror and regularly was stopped
before going out in public and
redirected. We apologize for not
always succeeding.
The best and wisest decision
he ever made was cruising down
the road and spotting, courting
and marrying Patricia in 1959
and convincing her to spawn two
children Fred Tokash Jr of New
York and Shanna of Selma. He
took full credit for being a great
role model and was proud of being
“Big Daddy” to them.
Preceded in death by his
mom and dad, Gladys and Louis;
two sisters, Jolan and Louise; and
sweet niece, Desiree.
Leaves two grandchildren,
Nicole and Cade and four great-
grandchildren all of Texas.
Special thanks to his
“adopted” son Mark, Nancy,
Uncle Ralph, Dennis and Dusty
Johnston, Bob, Kenny and J.D.
and our special hospice nurse,
Tiffany and dog, Kiowa.
No services at his request.
Be kind to one another and
eat some chips in his honor.
