materials, read, connect to
wireless internet, and participate
in programs. They will not be
able to check out books or other

individual property owner or
group of owners to file a routine
application to the board of
commissioners to have their
property added to the library
district. The property does not
need to be adjacent to the district.
Lasky also addressed the
issue of children who live outside
the district, especially children
from lower income families.

The Alliance was started in 2000 as a
result of two former survivors who polled the
community and developed a board of directors.
The organization began providing direct
services to victims of sexual and domestic
violence in 2002.
Currently, services include crisis
intervention, safety planning, emergency
shelter, food and transportation. Clients may
also receive assistance obtaining protection
orders, public benefits and crime victim
compensation.

“All of us who are involved
with the library want to make
sure those kids have access. We
are all committed to fundraising
and grant writing to provide
cards without charge. Also, we
already partner with the Three
Rivers School District, and
we’re going to continue that
partnership.”
Lasky noted that grants to
serve children, especially low
income children, are the easiest
to get. Those for adults are much
harder.
And she added that the
board will look at ways to
ameliorate the cost of library
access, so that larger families are
not unduly impacted.
When Lasky was asked how
the level of individual donations
will be impacted she replied:
“We expect a significant decrease

In one such case, the burglars cut a hole in the roof and
upon gaining entry they stole money and cigarettes. In two of
the other incidences their shed was broken into. One of the
more memorable items having been stolen was a camera.
“The criminal element is just ridiculous in Cave Junction,”
Sue said in conclusion, “but I don’t know what else to do. We
just try to prevent it as much as possible.”
Ray’s Food Place reported that the group of individuals
broke two of their doors but failed to gain entry. It was
theorized that the burglars somehow got spooked because, after
breaking the hinges, they could clearly get inside but didn’t.
Interestingly enough, the group was going to use a red wagon
to haul off their spoils.
“I feel bad for the kids doing this because one time they’re
going to run into the wrong person and someone’s going to get
seriously hurt.” Town said of the entire situation, “I’m afraid
it’s going to escalate until it gets to that point.”

learning.”

The Alliance is offering two different
support groups on a rotating basis: Helping
Children Exposed to Batterers will begin
mid-April at Project Baby Check, located at
Siskiyou Community Health Center in Cave
Junction and Unconditional Self Love.
The organization also maintains a
community garden which the I.V. Garden Club
participates in to help provide fresh produce for
people in need and the local Master Gardeners
offer weekly classes, from identifying weeds
and preparing your soil to how to plant peas.
The Alliance’s prevention efforts focus on
high school health classes, school leadership
