The ‘Beatles’ to make appearance at fundraiser
The Illinois River Valley
Arts Council’s (IRVAC) annual
fundraiser March 25 is “Can’t Buy
Me Love” with a decidedly British
theme in music, food and décor.
The Love Band will perform
an all-Beatles tribute, spanning
their entire body of work. The
group will include Kimberly and
J.D. Smith, leaders of the Plastic
Onion Band, a Beatles cover group
based in Pacifica, California for
over 10 years.
Kimberly Smith, formerly
Baumback lived in the Valley for
20 years, raising her children here.
She met J.D. in Takilma who was a
former member of Moby Grape and
has opened for both Van Morrison
and Brian Wilson.
Also included in the band
is Johnny Trujillo, a professional
musician for over 40 years. In
2015 he opened for Robin Trower
and John Mayall at the Rogue
Theatre in Grants Pass. A member
of The Toyes, Colonel Mustard
and Oregon Little Big Band, his
favorite genre to perform is the
Beatles.
Other Love Band members
include drummer Dave Mathieu
from Broadway Phil and the
Shouters and guitarist Mike
Herrman.
“All the members of the band
are strong community supporters
and are looking forward to helping
raise much needed funds for arts
education in Cave Junction’s public
schools,” said Kimberly Smith.
According to IRVAC
President Linda Corey, “This is a
very worthy cause. We are raising
money for Learning Through Arts.
Our program helps students learn,
gives them a creative outlet and is
vital to making learning a joyful
experience.”
IRVAC is a 501c3 nonprofit
charity whose mission is to
provide arts education, public art
experiences and support for local
artists, singers and musicians.
And once again, IRVAC will
transform the appearance of the
gymnasium at Selma Community
Education Center, this time with
yellow submarines and an English
cityscape designed by Barbara
Leon.
“Imagine the Selma Center
converted into a London club
with Beatle’s art on the walls,
British flags, twinkling lights, and
beautiful tables set for dinner. Our
superb Beatles tribute band will
be playing all your favorite Beatle
songs!” said Corey.
Hearty “pub grub” is included
in the ticket price featuring
shepherd’s pie, Irish veggie
cobbler, salad and appetizer bar,
coffee and tea. The desserts will
include various cakes, English
trifle, cheesecake and chocolate
truffles courtesy of Harry & David.
The cash bar will feature beer
and ale donated by Wild River
Brewery and Pizza as well as a
selection of red and white wines.
“Bruce Stone will have his
professional photo studio set up on
the big stage with your choice of
backgrounds. You may have your
portrait made for a reasonable fee,”
said Corey.
The live auction will be
conducted by Kent Fisher and will
feature special getaway packages
to two of the top “50 Best Fan-
Favorite Destinations in Oregon”:
The Historic Balch Hotel and the
Chateau at the Oregon Caves.
Other auction items include
tickets to the Britt Festival and

Valley Girls
seek recipients
The Valley
Girls Quilters Club
is seeking funding
requests from local
nonprofit organizations
that help the youth of
the Illinois Valley.
Every year, the
Valley Girls host a quilt
show in October to
showcase the talents of
local quilters. Proceeds
from the show, the
sale of tickets for their
Opportunity Quilt as
well as the sale of quilt
calendars are dedicated
to our community’s
youngsters. The
Illinois Valley branch
of the Boys and Girls
Club receives part
of the money while
other youth-oriented
nonprofit groups also
benefit. And now is the
time to let us know if
your group would like
to benefit from Valley
Girls funding.
To apply for a
Valley Girls grant,
write a letter that
explains what your group
does as well as how it will
use the money to benefit local
youth. We’d also love to know
how many youngsters you
serve as well as the sorts of
things you have done in the
past. Also, how would your
organization help with set up
and take down of the show, as
well as promote the event.
Letters should be sent
to the Valley Girls Quilters
c/o Verla Beck, 1031 N. Old
Stage Road, Cave Junction,
OR 97523, and they need to
be received by Friday, March
31 for consideration.
Previous recipients
of Valley Girls Quilters
Club grants include local
reading programs the Illinois
Valley Branch of Josephine
Community Libraries and the
Jubilee Park playground. Last
year, the Healing Hearts and
Hooves therapeutic riding
program and the Takilma
Dome School, along with
the Illinois Valley branch
of the Boys and Girls Club,
benefited from the funds
raised.
