Lady Cougars
let 1 get away
On Friday, it took only 14
seconds for Aundrea Miller to give
the Cougs the lead over the visiting
Lakeview Honkers, with a shot on
a drive and a foul shot. The Lady
Cougars would hold that lead for
most of the game, with the first
period ending at 13-6. The second
quarter found the hometown girls
gradually pulling away with sharp
offense and crisp defense. With two
and a half minutes to go in the half,
Lakeview called a timeout with the
score at 24 to 12, but apparently
hadn’t found the answer yet as the
half ended - Cougars 30, Lakeview
17. Everything seemed to be going
fine through the third quarter, but
then the wheels started coming off
well into the fourth. The sizable lead
had evaporated and the score was
tied at 46 with 2:45 remaining in
the game. Miller was able to capture
the lead twice again with good
foul shooting, but the Lady Cougs
continued to look rattled after the
Honkers hit a three-pointer. Roza
Jonas tied the score again at 51 with
a foul shot, but the Honkers seemed
to score at will and, down by four,
the Cougs were forced to use foul
strategy, but it didn’t work as well
this time as it has in the past and the
game ended with a score of 53-57,
making this current league record -
three wins, one loss. Miller finished
with 18 points, eight rebounds and
five assists; Tori Johnson had 15
points, seven rebounds and three
steals; Courtney Scott had eight
points; and Aarika Brooks had
seven points and nine rebounds.
Saturday, the girls trounced Rogue
River 52-12, where Miller had 15
points, Johnson 14 and Brooks 10.
The Lady Cougars will take to the
court again at home against Rogue
River Tuesday and Friday against St.
Mary’s. The Friday home game will
be “Senior Night.”
Cougars find
the hoop
Friday night, the Cougars took
on the Lakeview Honkers at home
in the Ken Mann Gymnasium. After
struggling this season, the hometown
boys had the fair sized crowd
wondering as they got off to a slow
start for the first few minutes, and
then Elijah Polk hit a 2-pointer for
the lead with three minutes to go in
the first quarter, with a score of 7-6.
With time running out in the period,
Skylar McLanahan shot from 3-point
land and beat the buzzer to set the

score at 12-6. At the beginning of
the second half, a hard McLanahan
pass across the key hit a defender’s
hand and popped up and in for two
points as if it were planned. By the
middle of the second quarter, it was
clear that the Cougars were hitting
on all cylinders and bringing the
energy. Tanner Davis hit a couple
of nifty shots and it was 29-16 at
the half. After a fine show by the
junior cheerleaders, McLanahan got
to work and scored 11 points in the
third along with some tough defense
and with a buzzer beater of his own,
Caleb Hess made it 43-27. Not many
points were scored in the fourth,
but the Cougars relentless defense
only allowed four by the Honkers.
Final score - 49-31. High scorer was
McLanahan with 28 points. This
week brings Rogue River to town
Tuesday and St. Mary’s Friday for
“Senior Night.”
