“Tackle the fear of public
speaking, which is the No. 1
fear even above death,” said
Jennifer Wagner, speech and
debate coach at Illinois Valley
High School (IVHS). Four
years ago Wagner started the
first IVHS speech and debate
team as a class for more English
credits. She had decided it was
important to take the class to one
of Oregon’s speech tournaments
so they could see a competitive
event and from there the class
grew. Now the speech and
debate team is an after school
class and for participating can
earn you a varsity letter.
Recently there has been
a decline in participants. The
2016-2017 team only consists
of two players: Owen Dwyer
and Ari Dwyer. Wagner believes
this could be due to a lack of
connection between her and the
students because she is now a
teacher at Hidden Valley High
School instead of IVHS. This
also makes it hard on the team
when they only meet once a
week. “Another problem I’ve
encountered,” Wagner said, “is
a lot of the students are already
stretched pretty thin with a lot
of other activities and some that
have shown an interest decided
they can’t do it because they are
already doing three other things
and it is taking up too much of
their time.”
When asked if there was a
reason to join Wagner replied,
“There are so many but the
biggest one is that it really
gives them incredible skills
for anything they want to do
in life.” She has always had a
variety of students take part in
the team. There is no common
trait, no requirements, just a
love of the English language or
just a desire to conquer a fear of
public speaking. Wagner aims to
get students to be more critical
thinkers, to enlighten them and
to make them better citizens for
the future.
According to Wagner, Ari
Dwyer stated that one of his
favorite things about the speech
and debate team is “all the
people you meet who are open
minded and discussing issues.”
Speech and debate can take
away people’s fear of public
speaking, build theorists, and
enlighten students to the world
around them. It gives students
skills for the life ahead of
them. “Tackle the fear of public
speaking,” added Wagner.
