Upon special request from our
dear barista, McKenzie, we take a
nostalgic journey back to March 29,
1995. It was spring time, or so the
Valley thought, 12 plus inches of
snow is what spring break brought.
Unbeknownst to anyone, but the
two janitors at Lorna Byrne, the
weight of the snow was too much
for the gym to bear and collapsed
into a pile of snow and rubble. Grab
your coat and scarf because it’s
a blizzard in this week’s Archive
Zone.

students, about what’s happened
in the wake of the gymnasium
roof collapse, was to be sent
this week. With a roar like dull
thunder and a cloud of dust that
looked like smoke, the 3-year-
old roof on the 45-year-old gym
collapsed Thursday morning,
March 23. Approximately 6 inches
of snow had accumulated on the
roof. Emergency personnel from
Illinois Valley Fire District, Care
Ambulance and the Josephine
County Sheriff’s Office responded
in force. But because it was spring
break, no students and only a
handful of adults were in the
building on Junction Avenue. So
no injuries resulted. If classes had
been in session, said officials of
Three Rivers School District, from
40 to 50 students could have been
using the gym at that particular
time, around 11 a.m. Because of the
situation, no classes are being held
at LBMS this week, giving students
another week of spring break.
Reward set to capture killers
of geese, emus. Violent deaths of
several birds in Illinois Valley –
including a $20,000 pair of breeder
emus – are being investigated by
Oregon State Police. And a reward
of up to $1,500 is offered for
information leading to the arrest
and conviction of those responsible.
The emus, owned by Ernie Brodie
of Hummingbird Road, were
discovered killed Sunday afternoon,
March 26. Brodie said that the birds
apparently were put to death by
more than one person who entered
his property and used metal T-posts
as their weapons. The posts were
found in a nearby ditch, he said.
The birds, related to ostriches, but
smaller, were about 2 years old,
said Brodie. He acquired them
a year ago. Of the reward, $500
is from Brodie and several other
Illinois Valley residents who have
animals and want to apprehend the
culprits. In addition, up to another
$1,000 reward is available from the
Farm Bureau. In a possibly related
case, OSP is checking for clues
regarding suspects who have killed
four geese that belong to Charles
Miller in the 5000 block of Holland
Loop Road. Miller told the sheriff’s
office that on March 17 he found
three dead geese, possibly killed
by a slingshot and a maul. And
approximately two weeks ago, he
found two other of his geese. One
had been beaten to death with a
shovel; the other was injured.

God Bless America!
Today as I write these words our country is inaugurating
a new president. While I didn’t vote for him, I certainly will be
praying that the Lord will guide him in the important decisions
he will be making for our country.
Interesting enough God weighs in on new leaders, this is
what He says. “He (God) removes kings, and sets up kings, He
gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to them that know
understanding.” Daniel 2:21
Thank God that in the United States of America where
we have Freedom of religion. Some of the first settlers here in
America came so that they could worship God according to the
dictates of their own conscious.
Our founding fathers also believed in religious liberty so
much that they wrote it right into our constitution. “Congress
shall make no law regulating or prohibiting the free exercise of
religion.”
They strongly believed in separation of Church and State.
They also remembered the religious persecution some of them
had faced in Europe before coming to this country. Some-
times we tend to take all the blessings of religious freedom
for granted. Watching the news gives us an idea of the many
countries where people are leaving their homes so they can live
to worship the way they want to.
What a blessing to be living in America, the land of the
free and the Home of the brave. God Bless America!

Time for the DTR Talk
DTR. Some of you might recognize
what those letters stand for. If you’re not
sure, let me help you out. If you’re a young
man in a relationship with a young woman,
then chances are these letters strike fear
into your heart because DTR means: Define
The Relationship. It’s when you sit down
and you decide where things are going to go
from here.
I think that’s what many of us need to
do when it comes to our relationship with
Jesus. We need to decide if we’re just a fan,
or if we’re ready to be a follower.
Being a fan is easy. Fans acknowledge
who Jesus is. Fans are willing to talk about
how much they love him, about how much
he means to them and even how wonder-
ful he is. But what a fan isn’t willing to do
is give Jesus an all-access pass. A fan isn’t
ready to let him into every area of their life.
They give him free rein when it comes
to worshiping in church on Sunday or when
they whisper their prayers at night before
going to sleep. But let him in everywhere?
Not going to happen.
Things like lust, sex, marriage and
divorce, money, stress, work and politics;
those just aren’t part of the deal. We want
to keep him in a neat little Sunday box and
keep him out of the rest of our lives.
But Jesus isn’t satisfied with that. He
wants a relationship that’s all inclusive;
no holds barred. He wants you to love him
the same way that he loves you: with all of
your heart. He’s ready for you to define the
relationship.
The grace of Jesus doesn’t just invite us
to follow, it teaches us to follow. Jesus leads
by example. We know what we deserve, we
know what we have coming. But the words
of Jesus are words full of grace.
So how much longer will we live with
our regrets? How much longer will we say,
“Maybe tomorrow?” When will we let God’s
grace replace our guilt and accept a fresh
start and a second chance? When will we
finally respond to the simple gracious words
of Jesus, “Follow me?”
Hebrews 9:27 says, “Man is destined
to die once and after that, to face the judg-
ment.” Those are the two guarantees. We’ll
all die, and we’ll all stand before God.
When that moment comes to all of us,
there is only one question that will really
matter: “Have you decided to follow Jesus or
are you just going to stay a fan?” It’s time to
have that DTR talk.

Music, Peace, and Thankfulness
Colossians 3:15-16 (NKJV) 15 And let the peace of God
rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body;
and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in
all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to
the Lord.
As I began to write this, I began to wonder how many
times people have told me, “I just can’t sing” or some derivation
of that statement. I personally enjoy singing, and I enjoy most
types of music. I have some chants that I have been threatening
to bring to church to play some Sunday. Playing the guitar has
been a blessing for me also. I have played when I was happy,
thoughtful, rejoicing, or sad, and have found that the music I
have learned follows me through my days. Often I find myself
whistling or singing as I go about whatever project is before
me. One of the things I enjoy most is leading the children in our
school as they sing. They sing with such unrestrained enthusiasm
that I often come away totally blessed and encouraged.
We have a gospel sing every second Friday of each
month at 6:30 p.m. with several musicians playing and everyone
else singing along.
Every Sunday we spend time during our morning
service singing as part of our worship of the Lord. Songs can
express our deepest sorrows and greatest joys. It can minister
to people at every level, and that is why you hear music at both
weddings and funerals.
You say you can’t sing? I wouldn’t worry about it
– make a joyful noise anyway. I believe that when music comes
from a full heart God likes it regardless of how it sounds to man.
One complaint – much music of the day is very difficult
for children, so many don’t sing like they did when I was young.
Expose your young ones early to songs they can sing easily, and
then progress to the more difficult ones.
Let your heart and mind be filled with good music – I
bet you will live longer. Hope to see you Sunday.
