Guns in America and shooting back: by Dr. Glenn Mollette
I’m an advocate of the right to bear
arms. I own several nice pistols and a shot-
gun. I wouldn’t mind adding a couple of more
to my collection. I have never shot anybody
or aimed a gun at a person. I hope and pray I
never feel in such danger that I might feel the
urgency to do so. Aiming a gun at someone
means the possibility of taking that person’s
life. I would never want to be in that situa-
tion. However, I know I could do it if some-
one was intruding my home or threatening my
family.
There are two major reasons why people
want guns and they are the right for protec-
tion and to hunt animals. Some people like
collecting them and some like to shoot at
targets.
We try to imagine a society like America
free of firearms. Some believe this might be
utopia for our country. We then come back to
the issue of people who enjoy hunting deer,
elk, rabbits, bear, ducks, etc. The sport of
hunting and the griping fear of being vulner-
able to evil people will forever keep guns
flowing in America. Of course, let’s not for-
get the Second Amendment that is not going
away.
Sadly, we are all vulnerable to being
shot. This reality has existed since the found-
ing of our country. Almost anybody at any
time in this nation since the beginning could
access a firearm and shoot somebody. We
heard about outlaws and gunfights in the Wild
West back in the 1800s. Welcome to the Wild
West that now covers every inch of America
and unfortunately our world.
We don’t expect to be sitting at a coffee
shop sipping a latte and lose our life to an evil
person who walks down the street randomly
shooting, like those poor people did in Paris.
Nor do we anticipate going to hear some
music at a concert and be gunned down which
also happened in Paris. We don’t dream of
walking through an airport to pick up our
baggage and then be randomly gunned down
by an insane person. Nor do we ever dream of
sending our children to a school to be shot by
someone who got access to a gun. We didn’t
used to expect such incidents but now we
look around us. We check to see where the
exit doors are at malls and theatres.
We look twice around us at restaurants
and public events. We know that even in our
houses of worship that an unlocked door
means anybody might walk-in and begin
eliminating lives.
Terrorism has successfully taken away
our relaxed way of living and traveling in
America and most of the world. This is why
every effort must be made to eliminate such
groups as ISIS and any hate group that en-
courages such violence.
We must also realize that while wackos
might only be one in a million that it only
takes one to kill five people like happened in
Ft. Lauderdale International airport last week.
Don’t live in fear. Don’t die of a heart
attack stressing out because that’s what ter-
rorists want. Yet, always be alert, wary and
legally carry a gun and shoot back if you get
the chance.

Parakletos – The Comforter
John 16:7-8 (KJV) 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it
is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the
Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him
unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of
sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.
Parakletos is the Greek word for comforter which Jesus
used in John chapters 14, 15, and 16. Parakletos means “one
called alongside to help.” Note that some versions of the Bible
use Helper instead of Comforter.
In our Sunday morning service we are looking at
the Holy Spirit and the impact it has on a believer’s life and
service to the Lord. The power and presence of the Holy Spirit
in a believer’s life can be a difficult subject to grasp, and yet,
the work of the Spirit of God is vital to the spiritual growth
and empowerment of the believer. There is much that can be
understood with absolute certainty from the Bible about the Holy
Spirit – foundational should be that the Holy Spirit does not
work in contradiction to the Word of God. What we experience
in regards to the Holy Spirit must be in line with what the Bible
reveals about the Holy Spirit.
In John 14:6 there are certain promises made regarding
the Holy Spirit. Verse 16 says, “And I will pray the Father, and
He will give you another Comforter that He may abide with you
forever.” For the born-again believer in Christ, the Holy Spirit
will be given to them and be with them forever. In verse 26 of
chapter 14, the Comforter/Helper is designated as “the Holy
Spirit whom the Father will send in My name.” I John 15:26
Jesus declared, “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will
send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which
proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of Me.”
All this concerning the Holy Spirit was taught by Jesus
after His last supper with the disciples where He told them that
He was going away, that He would be betrayed by one of the
twelve, that big, boisterous Peter would deny Him three times,
and that the world would hate them – but in all these things there
would be the Spirit to help them and comfort them. For the
follower of Jesus there is a blessing – for that Comforter/Helper
is there for us also. In the hardships of this life you need never
be alone – for the Comforter, the Holy Spirit is there to help.
Maybe it would be good to read John chapters 13-17.

This past couple weeks have given me a
better perspective on life as it is. As the snow
started piling up, my first instinct was irritation.
“This is going to put a damper in my plans. I
have things that I need to do and I can’t get out
of my driveway.” Then the power went out.
Now I am really irritated! “Why is it taking so
long to get it fixed so I can at least watch TV
and find out what is going on in the world?”
Morning comes and I can’t even make coffee.
The end of the world is near. “Oh well, I’ll go to
town and have breakfast.” They’re out of power
too.
By now calls are coming in from
people who are in worse shape than I am;
people that when it is all said and done won’t
have power or heat for a week. One couple
unable to leave their driveway for a week and
a half and unable to keep doctor appointments
or get medication. I spent the morning getting
people unstuck and then getting pulled out when
I got stuck. I finally decided to go home and see
what I could accomplish. The power was still
out, but the camper had propane for heat and
cooking and enough battery to make it work as
long as I don’t turn on the lights. Reading by
candle light didn’t take long before giving up
but at least I had a hot cup of instant coffee.
As I sat in the candle light looking
out at the snow I was reminded of 1Timothy
6:6-8 “Now godliness with contentment is great
gain. For we brought nothing into this world,
and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And
having food and clothing, with these we shall be
content. “
I had food, clothing and heat as well
which is more than many had. I needed to be
thankful for what I had, not complaining about
what I didn’t have.
I understand in a tiny way what the
Apostle Paul meant when he said in Philippians
4:11-12 “I have learned in whatever state I am,
to be content. I know how to be abased, and I
know how to abound. Everywhere and in all
things I have learned both to be full and to be
hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.”
I am one of the lucky ones, the power
came on later that evening and the main
troubles were over for me. I hope the lesson on
contentment will remain. For now, I am really
sick of shoveling snow! Oops, I need to be
thankful I have health and strength to shovel
snow.

Snow Bound with Jesus!
We’ve lived here for 17 years and never seen a snow
storm like this before. From reports it has been the biggest
snow storm in the history of Southern Oregon since 1917! On
New Year’s Day when we first looked out the windows our
reaction was “Oh how beautiful! What a pretty white winter
wonderland!” We measured the snow at 25 inches.
Since it was too deep to get out our driveway, we each
chose books to read or some project to do at home. After sev-
eral days it occurred to me that now would be perfect time to
do an in-depth study of the Word of God. One of the studies I
did was on the selling time – beginning in Revelation 7:1-3 that
was a huge blessing to me. Then I began studying how to press
into the presence of Jesus. Texts like Jeremiah 29:11-13 were
a great blessing to me. “For I know the thoughts that I think
toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to
give you a future and a hope. Then shall you call on Me, and
you shall go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you
shall seek. Me, and find Me when you search for Me with all
you hear.” What a blessing!

I was beginning to understand that even though we were snow
bound the presence of Jesus through His Word was a joyful
experience.
We began praying that God would melt the snow so we
could get out of our driveway and keep a Bible Study ap-
pointment we had. He answered our prayer in a different way,
when our friend’s sons came over to plow the snow out of the
driveway. Praise the Lord! That week holds sweet memories of
being snow bound with Jesus!
