Monday, Jan. 2
*There was an
unoccupied red Ford Explorer
in the ditch near the Cave
Junction pool at 10:55 a.m.
*A Ford Ranger
blocked the westbound lane
of Lakeshore Drive at 10:59
a.m., so a tow company was
summoned. The Ranger’s
owner arrived and admitted
that she had parked in the road
for her convenience. The tow
was cancelled, and she was
conveniently issued a citation
for impeding traffic.
*At 11:25 a.m.,
Josephine County Sheriff’s
Office (JCSO) helped get a
Subaru out of a ditch in the
22000 block of Redwood
Hwy.
*A deputy gathered facts
at 112 S. Redwood Hwy. at
11:38 a.m.
*JCSO assisted
American Medical Response
on Hanby Lane at 11:46 a.m.
*At 12:41 p.m. a man
in the 7000 block of Lone
Mountain Road checked
on his mother, and she was
unresponsive. Illinois Valley
Funeral Directors were
advised, but they were on
delayed response due to road
conditions.
*Pacific Power was
advised of downed power
lines in the 6500 block of
Deer Creek Road at 12:53
p.m. Josephine County Public
Works needed to respond to
prevent passing vehicles from
driving over the lines.
*A deputy investigated
the 300 block of Burgundy
Lane at 2:36 p.m.
Outside the Valley
*Twenty-six incidents.
Tuesday, Jan. 3
*A concerned citizen
was worried about her elderly
neighbor in the 400 block of
Glendon Road. There was
no power in the area, and
roads were blocked due to the
storm. In true Cave Junction
style, another kind neighbor
saved the day and plowed the
road up to her house so they
could check on her.
*A red Ford Ranger was
abandoned in the middle of
the road at 25658 Redwood
Hwy. for a short time at 10:16
a.m. The driver soon returned
and drove away.
*The storm created
several incidents on Deer
Creek Road. At 10:33 a.m.,
Pacific Power was notified
that there was a tree into a
power line at MP 2 on Deer
Creek Road.
*At 11:03 a deputy
checked the 7800 block of
Deer Creek Road.
*A generator was
charging the battery of an
unoccupied vehicle in the
8800 block of Deer Creek
Road at 11:20 a.m.
*Roadway conditions
created difficulties in
navigation in the 7800 block
of Deer Creek Road at 11:28
a.m.
*JCSO went to the 7800
block of Deer Creek Road
in search of an individual
who no longer lived at that
location. New tenants moved
there in April.
*A driver couldn’t get
down the driveway at 6154
Deer Creek Road at 12:00
p.m., but did their best to
leave room for other cars to
go around on the roadway.
*A semi-tractor was
stuck in snow in a ditch in
the 4500 block of Lakeshore
Drive at 12:14 p.m.
*At 12:35 p.m. a
one-foot diameter tree was
resting at a 45-degree angle
against phone wires at MP
23 on Hwy. 199. Oregon
Department of Transportation
crews were aware of the
problem, and they were
trying to contact Charter
Communications.
*The gas station at 112
S. Redwood Hwy. was closed
at 12:55 p.m.
*At 1:03 p.m. license
plates were recovered from a
vehicle at 340 N. Sawyer Ave.
because of a mismatch with
the records at Department of
Motor Vehicle. The motorist
was cited into Cave Junction
Municipal Court for driving
without insurance and
registration, and for driving
on a suspended license.
*A driver at 520 W.
River St. was warned for
expired tags at 1:20 p.m.
*A daughter in the
400 block of S. Junction
Avenue phoned 911 because
her mother’s boyfriend was
throwing things and fighting
with her mom at 1:29 p.m. He
tried to leave, but the snow
was too deep in the driveway.
(Cabin fever.)
*At 1:33 a car was
blocking traffic in one lane
of Hwy. 199 at MP 35. Good
Samaritans brought the driver
to the store to get fuel.
*Four-wheel drive didn’t
help when a Chevy pickup
truck crashed into a power
pole at 3797 Deer Creek Road
at 2:20 p.m.
*A 2005 Toyota was
towed from MP 40 of Hwy.
199 following a non-injury
crash at 3:11 p.m.
*JCSO provided traffic
control at 3:31 p.m. while
a dark-colored Toyota was
towed from a ditch in the
1600 block of Deer Creek
Road.
*Middle-aged folks in
the 200 block of Madrona
Drive were stranded with no
food, water, or electricity at
4:11 p.m. They were disabled
and could not navigate the
2-3 feet of snow on the road
for transport to the Red Cross
Station. City of Cave Junction
Public Works arrived and
attempted to plow the road.
*The 911-call from the
7200 block of Rockydale
Road at 4:46 p.m. was an
accidental misdial.
Outside the Valley
*Seventeen situations.
Wednesday, Jan. 4
*A 20-inch diameter tree
was blocking the roadway at
6390 Lakeshore Drive at 9:13
a.m.
*At 9:14 a.m. a downed
tree was blocking the road
in the 200 block of Madrona
Drive. The city of CJ Public
Works director was aware
of the issue, but his hands
were tied because the city
only has a pickup truck snow
plow which wasn’t designed
to handle heavy snow.
Residents in that area did have
electricity, and their friends
provided food, so they were
OK until the tree could be
removed.
*A devoted daughter-
in-law was worried about
her husband’s relatives who
were snow-bound in the 300
block of Woods Way at 10:14
a.m. They were blocked in
by a downed tree, and had no
electricity. JCSO helped the
son access their residence, and
they were OK.
*A caring employer
was concerned that one of
the employees did not have
enough supplies to weather
the storm. A deputy went
on foot to the 5700 block of
Lakeshore Drive, and found
that the residents there did not
need assistance, and they had
enough food and water for a
few days.
*At noon, there was
a tree crossing a downed
communications line on the
road at MP 23 on Hwy. 199.
The line was knocked down
on Jan. 3.
*No one had heard from
a 72-year-old woman in the
8500 block of Deer Creek
Road for three days, and

she has a history of medical
issues. Her daughter requested
a welfare check because she
feared her mother had no
food, firewood, or electricity.
A tree in the road had been
removed, but downed power
lines prevented access to her
residence. JCSO brought the
woman into Selma so that she
could be transported to Three
Rivers Community Hospital
in Grants Pass.
*Several residents in
the 700 block of Rough and
Ready Creek were having a
tough time dealing with three
feet of snow at 12:31 p.m.
They needed help getting
out because they were out
of food. They were trying to
find someone with equipment
capable of clearing the
driveway.
*A wise elderly
woman in the 300 block
of Jackadel Lane did not
need any assistance at 1:08
p.m. because she was well-
prepared with plenty of food,
water, and wood heat.
*Dangerous winter
driving conditions didn’t
matter to a buffoon who was
driving 70 mph across Sauer’s
Flat and past the Illinois
Valley Golf Course at 2:31
p.m.
*A driverless vehicle
was causing a road hazard in
the travel lane at 407 W. River
St. at 2:40 p.m., so it was
towed. A certified letter will
be mailed to the last known
registered owner.
*An elderly woman in
the 100 block of Hays Cutoff
Road had been without heat
for two days, so a deputy
walked past a locked gate to
check on her. The gutsy gal
said she was cold, but she was
OK and declined assistance.
*JCSO rendered
assistance to wheel-chair
bound people in the 7500
block of Holland Loop
because their family members
couldn’t make it to their
home. Two feet of snow,
downed power lines and
a fallen tree blocked their
access.
*The driver of a black
4-Runner was warned for
expired registration at 3:40
p.m. in a parking lot in Cave
Junction.
*A deputy stopped by a
gas station at 112 S. Redwood
Hwy. at 3:47 p.m.
*A rugged 89-year-old
guy was weathering the storm
just fine, even though he
can’t walk at all and had no
electricity or heat at his home
in the 1100 block of Deer
Creek Road.
*Law enforcement
patrolled Lurline Lane at 4:03
p.m.
*A pedestrian flagged
down a deputy at 4:18 p.m.
near Gamay Drive and Merlot
Drive.
*A Colt revolver
manufactured by Connecticut
Valley Arms Corp. was found
during a traffic stop at S.
Caves Avenue and Caves
Hwy. at 4:27 p.m. The driver
was cited into CJ Municipal
Court for driving without
insurance or registration
and driving on a suspended
license.
*Red Cross asked law
enforcement to transport a
family in the 25100 block
of Redwood Hwy. to the
warming station, but they no
longer needed help.
*JCSO patrolled the 300
block of Clear Creek Road at
5:13 p.m.
Outside the Valley
*Thirteen log entries.
Thursday, Jan. 5
*A landlord allegedly
punched a tenant in the 36500
block of Redwood Hwy. at
8:37 a.m. during an argument
regarding non-payment of an
electric bill.
*JCSO and Search and
Rescue were headed to assist
three people, two dogs and a
cat from Road 40-7-04 outside
of CJ at 10:22 a.m. The
menagerie saved themselves
before the cavalry arrived.
*A deputy cruised
through Forest Creek Road
and Thompson Creek Road at
10:38 a.m.
*A nephew was
concerned about his aunt in
the 400 block of Glendon
Road because the last he
heard from her, she was
without electricity, and she
was boiling snow for water.
He could not reach her by
telephone, so he requested a
welfare check. Independent
Auntie walked to a neighbor’s
house.
*At 10:46 a.m. a deputy
brought a man from Briar
Lane to a Red Cross shelter
in CJ because he had no
electricity or heat.
*The residents in the
500 block of Terrace Heights
Drive were OK at 11:27 a.m.
*Four cold people from
the 600 block of Forest Creek
Road were dropped off at the
Red Cross Shelter in CJ at
5:24 p.m.
*A resident of Deer
Creek Road fired two warning
shots at a guy in a rusty red
truck at 12:42 p.m. The truck
driver had been trespassed
from that location years ago,
and there was an ongoing
problem with harassment
stemming from his menacing
behavior. Advice was
provided regarding obtaining
a restraining order.
*On Dec. 5, a guy
driving a golf cart lost a large
sum of money between First
Community Bank and E.
Watkins Street and S. Caves
Avenue. He reported the
incident on Dec. 29 because
the money was never located.
*Two people and their
dogs were rescued from
the 15000 block of Kerby
Mainline Road because they
were out of propane and
had not eaten in two days. A
deputy brought them to stay
with their family in the Kerby
Trailer Park at 3:05 p.m.
*A fellow was walking
down the 200 block of S.
Caves Avenue at 1:09 p.m.
when his grocery bag ripped.
When he approached a nearby
house with a porch light, the
occupant greeted him with
a gun and laser instead of a
paper bag.
*On Dec. 19, several
items were stolen from a
locked vehicle that was
parked in a driveway in the
200 block of W. Palmer
Street. The list consisted of
a Carhartt bag, Pendleton
blanket, first-aid kit, knife
tool, binoculars and a tool kit.
*Early morning on Dec.
19, a stranger tried to break
into an occupied house in
the 34900 block of Redwood
Hwy. Two weeks before that,
a battery was stolen from a
solar gate.
*Trespassers were
cutting holes in fences and
locks off gates in the 900
block of Kerby Mainline
Road, according to Southern
Oregon Sanitation. Once
inside, the rebels were
stealing trash, tires, cans, and
bottles. Between Saturday
night and Monday morning,
five fires were started with
tires in dumpsters.
*A hostile couple
refused to allow fire units to
respond to a fully-involved
structure fire in the 37000
Redwood Hwy. at 4:35
p.m. The presence of law
enforcement changed their
attitudes.
Outside the Valley
*Twenty-six incidents.
Friday, Jan. 6
*A fellow in the 17500
block of Redwood Hwy. was
snowed in, and his one small
heater was running out of
kerosene at 9:19 a.m. If his
friend didn’t show up with
more kerosene, he would
phone for help.
