Church Sunday’ to be

“Back to Church
Sunday” is a nationwide
initiative seeking to reach
the “un-churched” or “de-
churched” and will be held at
the Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church in Cave Junction on
Sept. 18, 2016 at 10 a.m.
The goal of this event is to
combat the decline of church
attendance in America by
encouraging the members of
participating congregations
to invite friends, family and
acquaintances. According to
the initiative’s website there
are 120 denominations of
Christianity that are going to
be represented, separately,
nationwide. At the event in
Cave Junction there will be
a barbeque after the sermon
and newcomers will receive
a welcome gift in the form
of a book of their choosing.
No other churches in Cave
Junction are participating but
there are many in Southern
Oregon that are.
Annemarie Richardson,
the host of the event, has
lived in Cave Junction
since 2009 and is the only
synod approved minister
for her denomination in
the state of Oregon. She
is the sole minister at the
Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church with three years of
experience and will be giving
the sermon at the event. She
was inspired by the Back
to Church Sunday initiative
two years ago—when she
hosted the event for the first
time—because she felt that
inviting people by word of
mouth is the best way to build
a close knit congregation.
On this topic Richardson
expressed, “If you’re going
to a church where you
already know someone it’s
a lot more comfortable than
going to a church where you
know no one.” According to
Richardson, typical Sundays
bring in a crowd of around 30
and she would like to expand
that number.
When asked why she
thought church attendance
was down nationwide she
stated that there are a variety
of factors but responded
allegorically that “Home itself
has changed … mom was
home all the time, the kids
came home—I mean there
was this connectedness in the
family. Now families … are
constantly off doing other
things so there is not that
kind of connection … That’s
kind of a miniature of what’s
happening in society. We just
don’t have that connectedness
to groups anymore.” She
added, “It used to be that
in school there was a basis
taught of Christian principles
even if they weren’t trying to
… teach one denomination
or another … there was the
idea that the founding fathers
founded this nation upon
Christian principles.”
However, getting
members to invite people
proves to be a somewhat
awkward proposition since
most feel uncomfortable
about reaching out. In
Richardson’s experience she
stated that, “For some reason
we always feel like were,
I don’t know, imposing on
someone else when actually
what we’re doing is we’re
offering a gift … Because it’s
a gift, people always have
the opportunity to say, ‘No,
I’m not interested.’” Despite
this, she is insistent that her
congregation try because
she feels that the lives of
Americans are stressful and
that church every Sunday, “…
helps to provide an anchor
and a base in a world that is
just in so much turmoil,” she
finished her idea by saying,
“It’s really important for us to
keep our balance and keep our
bearing.”
At this time there
are only denominations of
Christianity represented in the
Back to Church Sunday event
but, according to her, other
religious groups are more than
welcome to join.

*No one knew who owned the silver-
colored Buick Regal that has been parked
at 101 S. Junction Avenue for a week. Once
located, the registered owner had paperwork
showing the transfer, but the Department of
Motor Vehicles did not yet reflect the recent
change of the license plates. The Regal
owner’s parents were contacted to move his
car at 2:35 p.m.
*A deputy inspected the Six Mile
Recreation Site at 12:40 p.m., and the Store
Gulch Campground at 1:09 p.m.
*Oregon State Police (OSP) had no
units available at 2:41 p.m., so they requested
assistance in locating two palomino horses
running free near Redwood Hwy. at Hogue
Drive. They galloped away before law
enforcement arrived.
*At 3:55 p.m., a guy was hitting
something against a walking stick and
causing sparks at MP 1.2 of Lakeshore Drive.
Notes were faxed to OSP so they were aware
of the situation with Sparky.

Saturday, Aug. 27
*At 9:32 a.m. the 911 operator
overheard a chap in the background asking
a woman if she had called the cops, then
the caller said that it was a mistake phoning
911. She claimed that she did not need law
enforcement assistance, because they have
a verbal argument every morning when her
fella returns from his walk on Borica Drive.
(Some people prefer breakfast to start their
day.)
*Campers at the intersection of Road
029 and Eight Dollar Road were advised that
they had to vacate the next day, and they were
cautioned regarding registration issues at 9:57
a.m.
*A 24-hour notice to vacate was
given along with a warning for residing
on U.S. Forest Service land at Little Falls
Campground at 10:51 a.m. Another individual
was warned for illegal parking at the same
location at 11:52 a.m.
*At 10:58 a.m. a resident in the 1400
block of Rockydale Road activated a Lifeline
Alert regarding her neighbor who was cutting
trees down. She also thought that he was
demolishing a shed, stealing her vehicle and
that he had firearms. Law enforcement could
not respond immediately because they were
diverted to a life-threatening emergency call.
The issue turned out to be an unfounded
property line dispute, and Lifeline was
advised of the disposition.
*Grayback Campground Road was
patrolled by JCSO at 11:58 a.m.
*The operator of a Suzuki was warned
for speeding in the 1000 block of Caves Hwy.
at 1:49 p.m.
*Jubilee Park was apparently crime-free
at 2:15 p.m.
*All was fine on Kerby Mainline at 2:23
p.m.
*At 3:37 a motorist in a white Chevy
pickup truck at the Six Mile Campground
on Illinois River Road was warned for not
wearing a seat belt.
*Another driver was warned for seat belt
violation at 4:12 p.m. on Redwood Hwy. at
Draper Valley Road.
*Both license plates were reported
missing from a silver-colored Honda Accord
in the 5400 block of Lakeshore Drive at 4:46
p.m.
