Nearly 70 children attended the golf camp at I.V. Golf Club. By Nathan L. Pierce IVN Contributing Writer Yet another junior golf camp has come to its conclusion. Hosted by the mostly volunteer- operated Illinois Valley Golf Association, the season was a great success. With an increase of over 20 participants, this year’s camp showed promise for the future of golf in our small community. The juniors ranged in ages from four through 15 years of age. The golf camp consisted of four weeks of age-related group lessons followed by a tournament also geared to specific ages and ended with an awards banquet and pizza party. The goal of the program is to provide a safe, fun, learning summer activity for the children in the Valley. It is our belief that if you have fun doing something you will improve and in turn have more fun in this game that we love. Lessons are held on the driving range, practice green and for the more advanced students on the golf course. There is also the opportunity during each session to hit balls into targets on the range as well as a putting contest on the practice green to earn points. One winner from each age group won a $25 Wal- Mart gift card. This program was created over two decades ago by then Head-Pro Rex Denham and volunteer Bob Muswieck Sr. Over the last several years the program has been organized, run and overseen by Steve Lyons, Barbara Lane and Nathan Pierce (myself). It is the invaluable help of Wilber Morton and his grandsons, Gaven and Elias, junior instructors, that contributed to the camp’s success. Both Gaven and Elias have participated and graduated from junior golf and now are paying it forward. Additionally, without the support of parents and family we could not offer this annual summer opportunity. Following was the awards presentation where all participants received trophy-plaques (crafted by Cary G. Riley of I.V. Trophy & Collectibles) and goody bags. Next everyone enjoyed Perfect Pizza donated generously by Scott Thoms of Perfect Pizza. To finish everyone enjoyed ice-cream provided Jay and Marilyn Zieba of Coffee Heaven as well as desserts provided by many of the parents. Special thanks to our honored guest Mr. Bob Muswieck Sr. (91 years young). We would like to say thanks to the following private and business members of our wonderful community: Frank and Mary Ault for their 2011 gift that has and still supports our kids, Russ Wright, Lisa and Nancy of Dairy Queen (mini-blizzards for all), Wilber Morton for another very generous cash donation (and his timeless goodwill), the employees and volunteers of Illinois Golf Association and all the parents and family of our young golfers. Lastly, the most thanks to all of our wonderful, talented and kind (they helped each other) junior golfers.
