It’s now July and we should take
some time to learn all about our national
bird. It’s a bird that speaks USA in its
beauty and is so majestic. In 1782, the
Congress proclaimed the bald eagle as
our national bird. You can find this bird
on money, both coin and bills and of
course it’s on flags.
The bald eagle is not really bald.
“Bald” is from an obsolete English word
meaning white. Bald eagles don’t attain
their white heads and tail feathers until
their fifth year of age. You can never
mistake any other bird for a bald eagle.
It has a beautiful dark colored body with
a stunning white head and tail. The bald
eagle spends most of its time up north,
but during the colder winter months it
will fly down to Southern Oregon. You
can see them all over the state, but to find
the highest number of bald eagles you
must go to Klamath Falls. During the
months of January and February the birds
will hunt around the lake.
Take a day drive out and drive
around the lake and watch them hunt fish
and water fowl. Cheryl and I stopped to
watch two bald eagles fight over a duck
one had caught. What they didn’t see was
a third eagle coming down talons first,
ready to take it away from both. It was
amazing. I’ll never forget that.
I can remember the first time I saw
a bald eagle up close and personal and
the first word I said was, “Wow.” They
can weigh up to 10-12 pounds and have
a wingspan of 75 to 90 inches. Trust me,
that’s a, “Wow” in my book.
They have huge nest. The nest
can weigh around 1 ton. That’s right
2,000 pounds. One nest found in Florida
was 3 tons. They can be as large as 13
feet deep and 8 feet wide. You’ll find
their nest high up in the tallest trees
or rock outcrop. They love to have an
unobstructed view of their surroundings.
On June 28, 2007 the Department
of Interior took the American bald eagle
off the endangered species list. The
bald eagles numbers in the U.S. were
estimated to be 300,000 - 500,000 in the
1700s. Their numbers were once as low
as 500 nesting pairs. Today, there are an
estimated 9,789 breeding pairs. There
are 70,000 eagles in the whole of North
America and that includes Alaska and
Canada.
The bald eagle can fly to an altitude
of 10,000 feet. During level flight, they
can achieve speeds of about 30-35 mph.
The average bald eagle in the wild
may live as long as 30 years.
Once eagles pair up, they remain
together until one dies.
They sit at the top of the food
chain, making them more vulnerable
to toxic chemicals in the environment.
Since each link in the food chain tends to
concentrate chemicals from lower links.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
Who would have thought that we would even know the
name of a Muslim holiday, let alone have it affect our lives. But
apparently Ramadan affects us all.
ISIS made it clear that they wanted to make a big splash
during their holy month and they have: pulling off attacks in
Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon, Turkey, Israel, Bangladesh and Orlando,
Florida. It’s enough to make us all feel a little uneasy.
Especially since their new targets of choice are so-called
‘soft targets’ like night clubs, entertainment venues and restaurants;
anyplace where people gather. We used to fear getting on airplanes
so we’ve installed security measures designed to prevent terrorists
from bringing down planes. But now instead of trying to bring
planes down, they settle for killing innocents at the bottlenecks in
airports created by our own security measures.
Like a virus, these villains have learned to mutate in order to
take advantage of current conditions. The problem is that we can’t
adapt fast enough to their mutation in order to stop them.
So what’s the answer? It’s the same answer we’re always left
with when human measures aren’t equal to a challenge: TAKE IT
TO GOD.
I know that sometimes we think that’s a trite answer. But the
truth is, it’s the RIGHT answer.
I am struck by the Gospel lesson for July 3 from the Gospel
of Luke. It’s all about the 70 who were commissioned to go forth
and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Now those men faced
hatred, and demons and the opposition of the Devil himself. But
they still succeeded. Why? Because they were equipped with the
power of Jesus Christ.
In fact that’s all they were equipped with, because Jesus told
them to leave everything else behind and set out in the belief that
he would provide them with everything they needed.
Are we that strong in our belief? Are we so strong in faith
that we’d be willing to face opposition and criticism and, yes,
physical danger armed only with the Word of God and the Good
News of His Son Jesus Christ? That’s a pretty tall order and that’s
probably why Jesus was only able to find 70 who were willing to
do it.
That’s why in Luke 10:2 Jesus says: “The harvest is plentiful,
but the laborers are few.” He was setting us a challenge, just as he
set a challenge for the 70.
“Trust me, and I will provide you with everything you need.
All I need from you is your willingness to obey my command and
try.”
God can solve this problem. All we have to do is ask Him
and be willing to do whatever he asks of us. The first part is easy.
The second part...not so much. But when we’re willing to try and
to obey his command we can be victorious.

Sometimes I wonder what our founding
fathers would think of our current political
situation. They wrote many things presenting
their beliefs, hopes, and fears for our nation. We
just celebrated Independence Day (the Fourth of
July) Monday, and I wonder if we, as a nation,
don’t face a whole new attack of tyranny. Here
are quotes from some of our founding fathers
regarding separation of church and state.
Thomas Jefferson said, “God who gave
us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a
nation be thought secure when we have removed
their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds
of the people that these liberties are a gift from
God?.Indeed I tremble for my country when I
reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot
sleep forever.” In his second inaugural address in
1805, Thomas Jefferson stated the following: “In
matters of religion I have considered that its free
exercise is placed by the constitution independent
of the powers of the General (i.e. National)
Government.”
John Adams said, “The general
principles on which the fathers achieved
independence were the general principles of
Christianity I will avow that I then believed,
and now believe, that those general principles of
Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the
existence and attributes of God.”
James Madison stated, “We have
staked the whole future of American civilization,
not upon the power of government, far from
it. We’ve staked the future of all our political
institutions upon our capacity …to sustain
ourselves according to the Ten Commandments
of God.”
John Jay, the first chief justice of the US
Supreme Court, said, “Providence has given to
our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the
duty as well as the privilege and interest of our
Christian nation, to select and prefer Christians
for their rulers.”
Benjamin Rush said, “The only means
of establishing and perpetuating our republican
forms of government is the universal education
of our youth in the principles of Christianity by
means of the Bible.”
Noah Webster said, “Christian religion
is the most important and one of the first things
in which all children under a free government
ought to be instructed. No truth is more evident
than that the Christian religion must be the basis
of any government intended to secure the rights
and privileges of a free people.”
